10 God Of War: Ascension (2013) - PS3
This 2013 title throws you back to the earliest days of Kratos' seemingly endless reign of bloodshed. Quite literally, the game begins focusing on Kratos' imprisonment and torture at the hands of the Furies because he broke his oath to Ares after the crafty god tricked Kratos into murdering his own wife and daughter.
The moment Kratos has the opportunity, he angrily breaks free of his bonds and kills the first Fury within sight, Megaera. The rest of the adventure follows Kratos hunting down the remaining Furies. He then believes that he ultimately must become a champion to the gods in order to obtain peace from his mental anguish over the loss of his family.
9 God Of War: Chains Of Olympus (2008) - PSP, PS3
Following Ascension, Kratos submits himself to an entire decade of servitude to the gods of Olympus. It's during this period that Chains of Olympus takes place. The gods task Kratos with obliterating the Persian army and killing their king who seeks to invade Attica. Following this introduction, Kratos witnesses the Sun fall from the sky and is tasked by Athena with finding Helios.
He later combats those who were responsible and conspired against Olympus, namely Morpheus and Persephone with the former fleeing and the latter being killed in battle with Kratos. The champion of Olympus also binds Atlas with the world forcing him to carry it for eternity.
8 God Of War (2005) - PS2, PS3
The debut of the God of War series introduced us to a man weary of doing murderous chores for the Olympian gods. After demanding that his servitude bear fruits, namely the erasure of his memories and nightmares, Athena informs Kratos that the gods will grant this gift only if he kills Ares, the God of War who is responsible for Kratos' endless torment.
A flashback depicts an oracle that binds the ashes of Kratos' family to his skin as a form of penance giving him a ghostly-white visage.Kratos must locate a mystical power contained within Pandora's Box and use it to kill Ares. 7 God Of War: Ghost Of Sparta (2010) - PSP, PS3
Ghost of Sparta introduces us to Kratos' brother, Deimos — a rare meaningful relationship in Kratos' life. 6 God Of War: Betrayal (2007) - Mobile
This mobile game is a side-scrolling action game that saw Kratos actually wielding his power and authority of godhood (narratively speaking). Being a Spartan, born and raised, he's awfully partial to Sparta and clearly a biased god. He aids the Spartans in a campaign of conquest across Greece.
He eventually enters a direct confrontation with Ceryx. Ceryx acts as Kratos' first direct warning from the gods that they will retaliate if he doesn't stop his brutal campaign. While this game can no longer be played, you can find entire playthroughs on YouTube.

With the help of the Titan Gaia, the Ghost of Sparta circumvents death and embarks on a journey to confront the Sisters of Fate to prevent his death at Zeus' hands. Kratos successfully eliminates the Fates, retrieves the Titans from a time before their destruction in the Great War, and uses them to scale Olympus to destroy the gods after learning that he is Zeus's son.

After doing so, the world plunges into chaos, but in an attempt to take the power of Pandora's box back from Kratos (hope), he impales himself to release it to the people of Greece.
