Whether set in the far reaches of space or a mystical fantasy land, video games tend to adhere to their own sense of logic, however, that hasn’t stopped some games from having the odd moment that pulls the rug out from under us in strange and unexpected ways.

Whether it’s a lighthearted game getting surprisingly dark, an otherwise serious game having a moment of levity, or an already weird game peaking in its own brand of absurdity, let’s have a look at some of those moments that left us scratching our heads and lost for words.

Warning: This list contains some plot spoilers

10 Assassin's Creed Origins - A Gift From The Gods

Upon completing the quest A Gift From the Gods, a cut scene is triggered in which the main antagonist from Final Fantasy 15, Ardyn, is beamed up to heaven by a metal bird that shoots mystical swords at the ground.

As part of a Final Fantasy 15 crossover, you are then gifted with Ardyn’s sword and shield, as well as a Kweh mount which is modeled after the Chocobo. In a series like Assassin's Creed, which was made popular for its attention to religious, cultural, and historical detail, it's easy to see how this cameo would’ve taken many off guard.

9 Resident Evil Village - The Baby

As Resident Evil Village added vampires and werewolves to the zombie series, few expected the eighth Resident Evil game would also feature a giant deformed baby that pursues you in tight corridors in an attempt to swallow you whole.

Found early in the game in House Beneviento, many players got the shock of their life when this exquisitely designed monstrosity began pursuing them. As absurd as a giant baby is as an idea for a horror creature, Village pulls it off in what is both the weirdest and scariest part of the game.

8 Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - The Guardian Ape

Brutal and unrelenting boss battles are very much expected in a From Software game and The Guardian Ape in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was no exception. But, this boss does manage to stick out not for its difficulty, but for its aptly primitive attacks.

The giant white ape attempts to poison the player through a cloud of its own farts, and if that doesn’t work, it throws its poo at you. Once the ape is decapitated, you'll breathe a sigh of relief, only for the ape to suddenly reanimate and begin a second phase of battle, severed head in hand.

7 Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - The Promise

In this sequence from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill is shown a realistic simulation of his childhood home, as well as his deceased mother, who is very much alive and well. A black liquid will soon engulf the screen as the simulation continues, eventually engulfing the whole screen, leading to credits.

The screen will then give you the choice to accept the promise or reject it. Accepting the promise will end the game then and there, whereas rejecting the promise leads to a surprisingly dark sequence in which you must force yourself out of Peter’s mum's embrace before shooting her multiple times as she pleads for her life.

6 Twelve Minutes - Your Wife's Secret

Taboo subjects make for an easily shocking reveal, especially when they come out of nowhere like in the case of Twelve Minutes. The game, which sees you stuck in a time loop in which the protagonist and his pregnant wife are killed by an intruder, features an end-game plot twist that reveals the expecting couple to in fact be half-siblings.

The reveal that the player character isn’t only married to his half-sister, but is also having a baby with her only makes this unsettling twist hit even harder to swallow, and resulted in substantial backlash from both players and critics alike.

5 The Witcher 3 - The Botchling

The Witcher series isn’t short of weird moments, for example, the infamous unicorn scene in Wild Hunt, or Elthon the Harpy Man in Assassin of Kings, but perhaps, the most memorably unexpected encounter Geralt faces is with the Botchling.

Appearing in the quest Family Matters this grotesque mutant creature is the zombification of a stillborn child that feeds off pregnant women and their unborn children. The Witcher 3 has plenty of dark moments, however, nothing compares to this monstrosity's disturbing bestiary.

4 Final Fantasy 7 Remake - The Honeybee Inn

Whilst the Honeybee Inn featured in the 1997 original and has its fair share of weird and creepy moments, the moment that sticks out in the 2020 remake would have to be the surprisingly erotic rhythm dance sequence between Andrea and Cloud.

The game is full of various mini-games and the storyline at the Honeybee Inn is already strange, yet, this new addition for the Final Fantasy 7 remake perfectly encapsulates the absurdity of this specific plot line.

3 Red Dead Redemption 2 - A Bright Bouncing Boy

Red Dead Redemption 2 has perhaps one of the most heartbreaking narratives in gaming, be that as it may, that didn’t stop Rockstar from having a little bit of fun with its side quests and random encounters, such as the stranger quest, A Bright Bouncing Boy.

What begins as a simple remote control boat demonstration, quickly escalates to a Frankenstein-style resurrection of a robot that actually works for a brief moment. Once the quest is complete, you can return to the location to find the inventor dead and the robot upon a snowy mountain top mournfully repeating “papa”.

2 It Takes Two - Cutie's Fate

When husband and wife duo May and Cody in It Takes Two, believe they can break the curse put upon them by making their daughter cry, the pair proceed to kill her beloved elephant doll Cutie in a surprisingly brutal fashion.

This interactive and painfully prolonged murder sees both players work together to drag Cutie towards a nearby ledge, rip off one of her ears, and eventually force her off the ledge to her death, all whilst she begs for her life. You will likely need to take a moment to process this surprisingly harrowing and unexpected scene.

1 Death Stranding - The Ending

It’s hard to point to the single weirdest moment in Death Stranding, on the other hand, the final battle with Higgs and the ending that follows certainly leaves many players confused. The final battle takes many forms including stealth, throwing cargo at Higgs, and in the final phase, the battle switches to an arcade-style fist fight complete with goofy slow-motion impact shots.

After this fight, protagonist Sam Porter Bridges learns that Amelie, his sister, is also the soul of his deceased mother, as well as an extinction entity. You are eventually given the choice to shoot Amelie or hug her, the latter of which postpones the end of the world. After this, a near two-hour epilogue takes place finally ending with Sam breaking his Lou, his BB unit, out of its case and brings it to life. A fittingly weird end to an extremely weird game.
