Super Robot Wars Y is a tactical RPG that takes some of the most popular mecha franchises ever created and combines them all into one massive crossover episode. In general, the gameplay is nothing special; the main reason to play Super Robot Wars is to see your favorite mechs fighting alongside each other, all with their stylish signature attacks rendered in beautiful animations.

The Super Robot Wars series has featured dozens of different anime series over the years, with Super Robot Wars Y continuing this trend. From Gundam to Getter Robo, these are the best mecha anime series present in Super Robot Wars Y.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack

Char's Counterattack is an essential watch not only for the Universal Century Gundam timeline, but also for mecha fans in general. This anime movie is the culmination of the Universal Century up to that point, with Amuro Ray, the pilot of the original Gundam, returning as the main character as he fights his long-time rival, Char Aznable.

Char's Counterattack has some of the most iconic Mobile Suits ever designed, like the nu Gundam and Char's Sazabi, both of which are present in Super Robot Wars Y. Char's Counterattack's influence can't be understated, and it's definitely one of the best series represented in this game.

Aura Battler Dunbine

Aura Battler Dunbine is a dark and experimental isekai mecha anime from Gundam series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. The series protagonist, Sho Zama, is transported to Byston Well, a parallel fantasy world where people fight in insectoid mechas called Aura Battlers, using their life energy to grant them power.

Aura Battler Dunbine is an extremely unique cross of genres, but its dark themes pull everything together into an unforgettable experience. The mecha designs are also very distinct from the typical real robot designs found in Gundam, and you can find both the Dunbine and Sirbine in Super Robot Wars Y.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury

The Witch from Mercury is set in one of Gundam's many alternate universes, in which technology conglomerates control the galaxy and Gundams (or Gund-Arms) are banned. Piloting the Gundam Aerial, Suletta Mercury attends a school for technology and finds herself participating in a series of duels to decide the fate of its students.

The Witch from Mercury has one of the most unique premises among all the different Gundam series, allowing it to explore the intersection between technology and mankind in a unique way. The Mobile Suit designs are also top-notch, with the Aerial and Chuchu's Demi Trainer appearing in Super Robot Wars Y.

Getter Robo Arc

Getter Robo Arc is a sequel to both Shin Getter Robo and Getter Robo Go, following Hayato Jin as he leads a new team of Getter Robo pilots against a mysterious alien threat known as the Andromeda Stellaration.

Getter Robo is a long-time staple in the Super Robot Wars franchise, but most entries featured Getter Robo G or Apocalypse, so the focus on a new part of the story (and its associated mecha) is much appreciated. The Getter Robo Arc is an incredible mobile suit and deserves more recognition.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz

Endless Waltz is a sequel to Gundam Wing and continues the story of its five Gundam pilots and the plot surrounding Operation Meteor. The original Wing was the first Gundam anime to air in the West, so it's the first one a lot of long-time Gundam fans have seen and holds a special place in many fans' hearts.

Endless Waltz updates the main five pilots' mobile suits, and they're all included in Super Robot Wars Y, as well as the beloved Tallgeese 3. The Wing Zero alone is one of the most iconic Gundam mobile suits ever created, so it's great to see it and the other Wing suits return to Super Robot Wars.

Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion III Glorification

Lelouch of the Rebellion 3 - Glorification is the third part of a series of movies that adapts the original Code Geass anime. At least, the movies started out as an adaptation, but are actually set in an alternate timeline, so some things play out differently. Its sequel, Lelouch of the Re;surrection, also makes an appearance in Super Robot Wars Y to give a fuller cast of mechs.

Code Geass as a whole is up there with Evangelion in becoming a mainstream mecha anime outside of Gundam, and its representation in Super Robot Wars Y is wonderfully done. Code Geass sets itself apart from other mecha anime with its intriguing story and Geass powers, and Lelouch remains one of the most memorable protagonists in any anime series.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam

For the most part, Gundam is a fairly grounded series. After all, it essentially invented the 'real robot' mecha subgenre. However, Mobile Fighter G Gundam is anything but grounded (really, it's one of the most unhinged anime we've ever seen), and it's all the better for it.

The basic plot is that the entirety of human civilization decides who gets to run things through a tournament on Earth using Gundams, where the last one standing gets to govern the rest of society. The series has some of the best mobile suits in the franchise, including the Burning Gundam and Nobel Gundam (which is literally just Sailor Moon), both of which appear in Super Robot Wars Y.
