Summary

  • FromSoftware is hiring for "several new projects" now that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is out.
  • One clearly has something to do with Armored Core, as the 'Character Designer' role mentions "mecha" several times.

Elden Ring developer FromSoftware has posted a few job listings on its careers page for "several new projects" it has in the works (as reported by PSU). We don't know much about these, but we can glean from the 'Character Designer' role that one of them has something to do with a new Armored Core project.

According to the job board, the role is focused on concept art, characters, creatures, and most notably, "mecha". It's safe to assume, given the success of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, that FromSoftware isn't done with the series yet — whether that's a For Answer-style direct sequel, a new numbered entry, or a DLC, we don't know.

Mentions include a desire for the candidate to be "Experienced in character and mecha design"; that "People with expertise in mecha design are welcome", and that whoever applies must "Understand the concept of the game and the role of the characters and mecha". Clearly, mecha is important, and I doubt this is secretly a Metal Wolf Chaos sequel.

It Probably Won't Be Elden Ring 2 Or Dark Souls 4

That still leaves the other projects a mystery, but we can at least rule out a couple of games. CEO Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed in an interview earlier this year that FromSoftware has "no plans" for a second Elden Ring DLC or a potential sequel. He also said in 2016 that "Dark Souls is over" and that the team likewise has "no plan" for sequels, spin-offs, or tie-ins (as reported by Game Reactor).

FromSoftware Should Leave The Soulslike Genre Behind For A While

Before the soulslike genre picked up steam, FromSoftware was known for a much wider variety of genres than we're used to seeing.

FromSoftware has said that it would like to see a Bloodborne PC port, something fans have been calling for over the last few years, so it clearly hasn't moved on from Yharnam just yet. But with Japan Studio all but shut down and Sony remaining tightlipped on the game, it's unlikely these projects have anything to do with the ever-iconic Lovecraftian horror.

Odds are, these new projects are — like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring — completely new IP. Whether they're soulslike or not is another question entirely, but at least we can be sure that something is happening with Armored Core. We'll just have to wait and see for what the rest of them are.
