Summary

  • Funko shared sneak peeks of some of the NYCC-exclusive Funko Pops that will be released during the convention next month.
  • Among them was a Metal Knuckles figure that will join its collection os Sonic Pops.
  • A niche reference, Metal Knuckles debuted in Sonic R and hasn't appeared all that often since.

Funko has been turning a lot of Sonic characters into Pops this year, kicking the year off with a Shadow-Super Shadow two-pack and revealing new figures last week that will come with Chao Bitty Pops. With almost every main character from Sonic the Hedgehog covered, it's difficult to predict where Sega and Funko's working relationship will go next. A preview of what's coming at New York Comic-Con has given the game away, though.

Sneak peeks of NYCC-exclusive Pops were revealed over the weekend as Funko took a slightly different approach to its first looks. The top right corners of the upcoming Pops, roughly 25 percent of them, were shared on social media. More than enough for fans to figure out who the Pops represent, but not enough to know what the complete image will look like. Lots of first looks were shared, including a sneak peek image of a Metal Knuckles figure.

New York Comic-Con takes place between Thursday, October 17 and Sunday, October 20, 2024. The Metal Knuckles Pop will be available to buy at some point during that weekend.

That Funko has created a Metal Knuckles figure shows it is digging deep into Sonic's back catalog as the character is one that hasn't appeared all that often in the series. Created by Dr. Robotnik to thwart the real Knuckles in Sonic R. Like I said, pretty niche, although still somewhat relevant as Metal Knuckles returned as a skin in 2023's Sonic Superstars which isn't even a year old.

That said, Funko does tend to use Comic-Cons as a way to turn some less popular characters into Pops, knowing they'll sell out fast since they're dubbed exclusives. Pokemon's Jumbo Arceus was billed as a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive earlier this year and sold out almost instantly. Worth noting that even though they're exclusives, Comic-Con Pops can be bought even if you're not in attendance. If Funko takes the same approach to NYCC as it did to SDCC, there will be a mad rush for them when their listings are all added to Funko's official site at the same time.

The Funko wheel never stops turning, but the wheel has been picking up speed lately as we move out of summer and into the holiday season. League of Legends just got a new line of figures, and a range of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Pops featuring the late, great Captain Holt is also available now.
