Final Fantasy Is Getting Its First HD-2D Game With Final Fantasy Resonance
Final Fantasy is going to have a pretty big year next year, what with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and Final Fantasy 14's next expansion, Evercold, coming in January too. That doesn't mean there aren't any plans for the series this year though, as during today's Nintendo Direct, an HD-2D Final Fantasy game was announced called Final Fantasy Resonance.
It was a pretty jam-packed trailer, but before we dive into it, it's worth knowing that this is essentially a rebuilding and reimagining of the first season of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the free-to-play mobile game that was shut down back in 2025. It's not a port or remake, but he game will relate to Exvius by featuring the game's characters.
As for the combat, we got a nice look at that too. We can see that it looks to be the typical Octopath Traveller-esque turn-based system, with both allies and enemies having a set place on a timeline. You'll be able to manipulate the turn-order to your advantage, but the real difference with this game is the inclusion of Visions, which are the essence of different characters you can use to build an arsenal of skills.
And, of course, these Visions can be of Final Fantasy characters from previous games. Throughout the world of Final Fantasy Resonance, you'll be able to visit Vision Sanctums which will house the stories of past characters in the series. These will then unlock said character for you, letting you use icons like Cloud, Squall, Bartz, Terra, Shantotto, Yshtola, and more in battle.

Posts By Quinton O'ConnorIt looks very cool, and the next step in Square Enix's HD-2D project that shows no signs of slowing down. This is essentially a brand new Final Fantasy game in Hd-2D, and while it's clearly banking on nostalgia, you have to believe it's Square testing the waters for a Final Fantasy remake or a fully new game in that style.
Finally, it was revealed that we will actually be able to play this game pretty soon. Releasin in just four months, Final Fantasy Resonance will launch on October 22 later this year.
Final Fantasy Resonance was a pretty massive announcement, but Nintendo has plenty more up its sleeve too, such as a surprise trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, as well as a sneak peek at the rumored Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, which is also launching in 2026.
