Final Fantasy 7 Remake Lead Says Stop Focusing On The Ending

Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi doesn’t want players to entirely focus on Revelation’s ending, as it may be “fully faithful” or “something completely different”.

Now that Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s third and final entry, Revelation, has finally been announced for early next year, we know that the end of a remake project that’s been more than a decade in the making is finally on the horizon. While the stakes aren’t quite as high as with Rebirth, considering it had that moment to adapt, everyone’s still wondering what’s in store.

Will Revelation continue Remake and Rebirth’s path of changing the original game’s events and give us something completely new, or will it stick more closely to the script and wrap up Cloud’s story as we originally knew it? As tough as it is, Revelation’s director wants you to stop focusing on how everything’s going to wrap up.

He Wants Us All To Look Back On The Trilogy As A Whole

As pointed out by Twitter user Genki_JPN, Automaton recently had the chance to chat with Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi about the upcoming third and final entry. The interviewer asks Hamaguchi about his previous answers regarding the trilogy’s finale, implying it will have a happy ending.

In response, Hamaguchi jokingly says that people only “focus on the things they want to hear” and that he hasn’t told any outlet how Revelation is going to end. Beyond that obviously being a massive risk, Hamaguchi says that he doesn’t “want people to just focus on the ending”, and that he wants everyone to be glad when they look back on the trilogy as a whole.

Hamaguchi went on to say that the ending “might be fully faithful to the original” or “something completely different” but, whatever the case, he wants everyone to play it and find out for themselves. Of course, I can already see people honing in on that statement as a sign of what’s to come, so I fear his plea might not go the way he hopes.

At the very least, Hamaguchi does say that Revelation's ending will be definitive and won't have a cliffhanger. That's a step-up from Rebirth, at least.

Whatever the case, Remake and Rebirth proved that we really can’t predict what’s going to come in the Final Fantasy 7 remakes, so it might be better to stop trying to theorise about what’s going to happen and just enjoy the ride.
