Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's Character Portraits Pay Tribute To The Original's Menu Icons
As revealed in the recent gameplay showcase, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's character portraits are actually recreations of the menu icons from the original Final Fantasy 7.
Summer Game Fest's reveal of the long-awaited final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, Revelation, was already a monumental moment for fans with how much it revealed about the game. We saw the Highwind in action, Cid and Vincent's unique combat styles, a new job system with snazzy outfits, and oh so much more.
As you can probably imagine, though, the gameplay footage that was showcased as part of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's reveal is hiding a ton of details that the community has been steadily unpacking over the past few days. One minor detail that's already been spotted and has quickly become a fan-favourite is to do with the game's character portraits, which pay tribute to the original game.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's New Portraits Are Remakes Of The Original's Menu Icons
Cid's Cigarette Has Sadly Been Left In The Past, Though
During the gameplay showcase for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, a few shots were shown of the game's menu, which has been updated slightly since Rebirth. As pointed out by Twitter user Azezazel, one very neat detail is that the new character portraits shown in the menu are actually direct recreations of the icons featured in the original Final Fantasy 7.
x Your browser does not support the video tag.Rebirth and Remake both had circular portraits with unique shots of the party, but Revelation has changed the design to show more of the characters, who are all doing the exact same poses as they were in FF7. Cloud is glaring at the camera, Tifa is smiling with her head to the side, Cait Sith is waving from his moogle, and so on.
The only big difference is that Cid is no longer smoking a ciggie in his menu icon, which is due to his character not being a smoker anymore. Talk about loss of aura.
It's a cute detail that gets a little bit heartbreaking when you notice that there's clearly a missing space just beneath Cait Sith, which I'm taking as a purposeful choice to give you a constant reminder of who the team has lost. Depression aside, it's nice to see Square Enix take the chance to more directly pay tribute to FF7 now that (nearly) the whole gang is here.
