While many summons in the Final Fantasy series wield devastating power, none strike fear into the hearts of players quite like Odin. Hot off his villainous role in Final Fantasy 16, the mounted rider returns in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, this time as a materia you can wield against enemies.

Much like the vast majority of summons in the game, Odin is earned by defeating him in Chadley's combat simulator, giving the android the necessary data to synthesize an orb of materia. Triumphing over Odin in battle is no easy feat though, requiring thoughtful party composition, equipment management, and spell usage.

Odin Divine Intel Locations

Odin can be challenged upon entering the Nibel region in chapter 11 of the campaign.

As always, while heading to Chadley and taking him on immediately is an option, you're much better off finding his three Divine Intel locations scattered around the map, each of which lowers the difficulty of the boss fight.

The Nibel Chocobo (Selena) is required to reach all three summon crystals, so you will need to complete Esoteric Secrets of the Elders before continuing.

Once you finish that side quest, finding Odin's Divine Intel is a walk in the park. All three of them see you navigating through coves and grottos, making use of Selena's ability to hover over water and ascend to the crystals.

Divine Intel One

Close

Odin's first piece of Intel can be found almost immediately once you set foot in Nibel. As you progress down the path to your first objective, you'll spot a guidestone across the water in front of you.

After acquiring Selena, you can return to that guidestone and follow its lead through a flooded cave, where you'll use the chocobo's ability to fly up to the summon crystal.

Divine Intel Two

Close

Intel Two is a bit more involved. You'll approach the map marker from the south, looking for a part of the cliff you can reach with Selena's hovering ability.

Once you find it, you'll navigate through the caverns using both Selena and a walkable path, fighting some low-level enemies. Continue following the path to the top, where you'll find the summon crystal.

Divine Intel Three

Close

The third Intel spot can be found on Nibel's western border, among the small group of islands dotting its shore. Here, you'll once again use Selena to fly up to the top of the cliff. Then, you will enter the island's interior, where you will follow another path to reach your final quarry.

Finding each piece of Divine Intel in the Nibel region will upgrade your Odin summoning materia received upon defeating him. These upgrades include:

  • One crystal analyzed: summon level increased by one.
  • Two crystals analyzed: summon level increased by one.
  • Three crystals analyzed: unlock Allfather's Fury.

Now for the real test: actually fighting Odin. He's one of the toughest summons in the game and has abilities that can easily destroy your team.

Chief among them is Zantetsuken, a powerful cleave from his blade that will instantly kill your entire party. Much of your strategy for this fight will be finding ways to survive this devastating attack.

You must avoid all of Odin's attacks as much as you can. Being hit repeatedly will cause him to unleash Zantetsuken, but you can prevent him from ever using it (or at least delay its use as long as possible) by dodging his strikes and dealing a lot of damage.

You should go into the encounter understanding your party may be wiped at least once, if not multiple times, and thus, reviving is going to be the name of the game.

Equip everyone in your party with Revival Earrings, giving them an extra life after being killed. Weapons that give you the Reprieve ability are also a good idea, preventing a character from dying outright and giving them a fighting chance.

Once you summon Phoenix, dedicate one of your party members to just building ATB continuously and use Reraise. This can give a party member yet another life, so try to use it on characters that have been knocked out previously.

When you aren't desperately planning ways to survive, you should be casting debuffs on Odin. They will build his stagger bar and make his onslaught more bearable.

Be on the lookout for Sleipnir's Furor. This will clear Odin of all the negative status effects you've given him, but put him in a pressured state, making him easier to stagger.

Go on the offensive and attack him until he's staggered, then unleash all your most damaging abilities. Ideally, you should save limit breaks for moments like this, since they can really rip through his health bar.

As you progress through the fight, you may notice Odin resisting your debuffs. Don't panic; continue to avoid his attacks, and try other debuffs to see what works.

Recommended Materia For Fighting Odin

You'll want to consider the following materia selections for encountering Odin.

Recommended Defensive Materia

Materia

Use In Battle

Revival

Brings a party member back to life at the cost of MP. If you have leveled this materia up, you'll also have access to Arise, which revives its target back to full HP.

Reraise

Allows a character to automatically revive after being knocked out.

Healing

Helps keep the party alive by restoring HP.

Prayer

Heals every party member at once. Costs two ATB charges to use.

Phoenix

Deals damage, and also heals party members after unleashing its ultimate ability.

Recommended Offensive Materia

Materia

Use In Battle

Enervation

Allows the user to cast Deprotect and Deshell, lowering physical and magic defense.

Disempowerment

Allows the user to cast Debrave and Defaith, lowering physical and magical attack power.

Poison

Poisons the enemy, dealing continuous damage over time.

Recommended Party Members For Fighting Odin

Before you go into battle, you should decide what role each party member is going to play. It's a good idea to have a healer and powerful magic user, so Aerith is a good choice.

Equip Aerith with the revival and healing materia, and if you have extra slots, give her the debuffs, too, since she commands an impressive amount of MP.

Your other two combatants will be focused exclusively on debuffing and doing damage. You have a lot of options here, but Cloud, Red XIII, and Yuffie are your best bets due to their combination of power and speed.

Barret isn't a bad choice either if you want a tank on hand to draw Odin's fury.

Don't get discouraged if this boss fight takes you many tries; it's really tough! When you finally win, you'll add another great summon to your arsenal.
