Final Fantasy 16 returns to the semi-linear format of past games in the series, with a few side quests and optional battles here and there to explore. This more linear approach allows the game to tell a robust and deep story, with the option for additional environmental world-building through side quests and Hunts.

As you progress through Clive's story, you will eventually come across a point of no return, where proceeding forward will lock you out of previous content. If you've come to this point and are wondering how to continue, we've got you covered. Below, we'll take a look at when this point of no return occurs, and what to do before continuing.

When Is The Point Of No Return?

The first point of no return occurs before the quest to Drake's Head. If you attempt to enter this quest, the game will warn you that you are entering a point of no return, so you don't need to worry about stumbling into this decisive quest before you're good and ready.

What Happens At The Point Of No Return?

So, what exactly happens at the point of no return? Without spoiling the story, any side quests you still have unfinished will become permanently unavailable. While the rewards for early side quests aren't essential, completionists who want to complete everything in the game should definitely take the time to do so.

When Is The Second Point Of No Return?

Much later in the game, right before the final mission, there is a second point of no return moment. Without getting into spoilers, entering this mission will lock you out of the rest of the content in the game, so you should finish any Hunts or Side Quest you are still holding on to before venturing into this mission.

The quest is called "Return to Their Origin", and unlike the point of no return before the Drake's Head quest, there is no warning this time. If you're paying attention to the story, it should be fairly obvious that this is the final decisive battle.

If you want to proceed with the story but want to go back later and complete any other content you missed, you can make a second save file just before entering the final quest. Cleared game save data will also be created upon completing this quest and rolling the credits, allowing you to start a new game plus run.
