Final Fantasy XIV: I Hope The New Limited Job Is A Puppetmaster That Uses Your Minions

At the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in London, producer and director Naoki Yoshida revealed that a new limited job will added to the game in the 7.X series following the launch of its next expansion, Dawntrail. So far, we’ve only had one Limited Job — Blue Mage. Unlike other jobs, Blue Mage requires a little more legwork as players have to defeat specific monsters in the world and various duties to learn their spells before using them, whereas with other jobs, you just level up and complete quests to get all your skills and spells.
Much like the name suggests, Limited Jobs have more restrictions than normal job roles. They have lower level caps, and they can’t participate in Main Scenario Quests, Ultimate Raids, Deep Dungeons, PvP, and more. They can enter dungeons and trials in pre-made and undersized parties but can’t use Duty Roulette, Trusts, or Duty Support. It’s a great option for players who love soloing, tackling content with specific tactics, or being able to farm Moogle Tomes in the most efficient way possible. Plus, it’s plain and simple fun.

I would love it if we had a proper FFXIV theme park!
PostsIt stands to reason that the next Limited Job will also take advantage of the game world in some way, encouraging players to undertake other side content to progress. My initial hope was for Beastmaster, exploring the world to tame different creatures and use them in battle, letting Square Enix try its hand at a Pokemon minigame much as World of Warcraft did. Then the obsessed minion collector in me decided it would be even better if, instead of taming monsters, why not use minions? These adorable little pets we collect that follow us around that you earn from practically every type of content in the game seem like the perfect choice to partner with a Limited Job.
A friend quickly pointed out I was effectively thinking of a Puppetmaster. After all, minions are mammets. They’re puppets. I can’t help it, though. I block Puppetmaster from my mind. Otherwise, I have to recall the absolutely hideous Puppetmaster Artifact Armour from Final Fantasy 11. But it’s a fair point. This could be the perfect time for the series to bring Puppetmaster back, minus the ugly outfit.
It could be especially interesting if the minion attacks from the Lord of Veminion RTS minigame were utilised for Puppetmaster, too. This would ensure that each minion has its own strengths and special weaknesses, so swapping out different ones in combat provides a tactical element. After all, you wouldn’t want a huge collection of minions and no reason to change from your favourite.
Minion types in Lord of Verminion have strengths and weaknesses related to the other types. For example, Monsters are strong against Critters, Critters are strong against Poppets, etc, and this could be reworked to focus on monster types in the world. Critters could be good against Beastkin, or Poppets could be strong against Dragons.
Despite being an avid minion collector with over 400 on my main character, I rarely swap between more than a few. I have my favourites, and why would I use most of the others? Puppetmaster would be a great reason. We’ll have to hang tight and wait and see what gets revealed next. If we’re lucky, maybe there will be new information on the upcoming Limited Job at the Japanese Fan Festival in January.
