While Final Fantasy 14 is ostensibly a game about the Warrior of Light and their quest to save the world, another world, and the entire universe, it is also a game about acquiring lots of items, crafting and gathering, and making money. And once you've made money, you need to make a whole lot more money. Why? Because money.

Retainers are a key part of this process. These helpful servants require only a special, easily obtained currency to do their job and they can provide you with great riches, unique items, and crafting materials you're too lazy to gather yourself.

Are Extra Retainers Worth it?

By default, you will have access to two retainers. This presents a few limitations:

• There are four 'types' of reainers: Combat, Miner, Botanist, and Fisher. By default, you can only cover two of them.
• Each retainer has 175 slots of storagespace. If you are a devoted crafter and gatherer, this may not be enough for your plans.
• Each retainer can only sell 20 items on the Marketboard at a time. Prolific crafters may want to sell more than 40 items at a time.

Through the Mogstation, you can hire additional retainers. This can be accomplished through two methods:

If you wanted to hire a maximum of ten retainers at once, your total additional cost would be $19/£12.55 per month.

So is it worth it? With extra retainers, you get access to far more storage space and the ability to acquire more items at a time through Ventures.

A minimum of two extra retainers would allow you to have one retainer of every 'type', which would allow you to gather every material that retainers can acquire (once you've levelled them up enough and given them the right equipment) - as well as all types of Venture-exclusive minions.

In the end, it comes down to how much you value the storage, efficiency, and time saved by having more retainers than the default.

I personally have six extra retainers for a grand total of eight as I am a prolific crafter and gatherer who loathes the idea of having to throw away materials. This may resonate with you.
