Dragons have been a large part of Final Fantasy 14's lore since A Realm Reborn. However, despite the prominence of several different dragon characters in the story, this mystical race has remained shrouded in mystery. Not much is known about the origins of dragons in Eorzea, at least until Endwalker.

Midgardsormr, Nidhogg, and Vrtra are just a few of the important dragons you encounter in FF14. If you're wondering who the rest of First Brood are, and what happens to them over the course of the game's story, you've come to the right place.

Spoilers ahead for the entirety of Final Fantasy 14's story!

Dragonstar And The History Of Dragons

Midgardsormr is one of the most prominent dragons in Final Fantasy 14, playing a major role in the Heavensward expansion storyline. Midgardsormr is the father of all dragons, primarily the father of the First Brood, which were the first dragons to appear in the Source.

Despite their prominence in the world of Etheirys, Midgardsormr and the First Brood are actually not from this planet. Their homeworld, Dragonstar, is an ancient and distant planet where all dragon-kind lived.

However, a mechanical warrior race known as the Omicrons invaded Dragonstar, waging war on the dragons to conquer their planet and take their resources.

Dragonstar is visible from Etheirys, the study of which is one of the primary forms of research that the Ishgardian Astrologions undertake.

The war on Dragonstar nearly annihilated all dragons. Midgardsormr took the final surviving eggs and fled the planet, traveling through space until he reached the planet of Etheirys, where he landed to recover from the Omicron's attack.

Shortly after, these seven dragons hatched, becoming the First Brood of Midgardsormr.

Who Are The First Brood?

The First Brood were the first seven dragons that were born of Midgardsormr. The names of these dragons are listed below.

  • Bahamut
  • Tiamat
  • Hraesvelgr
  • Nidhogg
  • Ratatoskr
  • Azdaja
  • Vrtra

Essentially, Midgardsormr and the First Brood form the head of the dragon family tree on Etheirys. It was from them that all other dragons were born. As the dragons matured, they spread across the land.

What Happened To The First Brood?

Eventually, the First Brood left the nest, spreading across the planet to its different corners. Below, you can find information on each of the seven First Brood, including what they've done since arriving on Etheirys.

Bahamut

Bahamut, along with Tiamat, formed the Meracydian Horde. However, many of the Horde, and Bahamut himself, fell in battle against the ancient Allagan Empire, who sought to enslave and control the dragons, using their power for their own purposes.

This Primal Bahamut was sealed inside the red moon Dalamud. By using their vast technology, they were able to keep Bahamut in stasis inside the moon, allowing Bahamut to stay perpetually summoned and allowing the Allagans to constantly siphon energy from him to power their research.

As we know, the Ascians eventually un-sealed Bahamut of Dalamud, attempting to use his power to rejoin the planet with one of its Reflections. Ultimately, this calamity was prevented by Louisoix Leveilleur, and the remnants of the Primal Bahamut were later destroyed by the current Warrior of Light.

Tiamat

After Bahamut's defeat by the Allagan Empire, Tiamat was later manipulated by the Ascians to summon a Primal version of Bahamut, which the Allagans then sealed inside Dalamud. She then allowed herself to be captured by the Allagans, as a form of self-punishment for summoning the false Bahamut.

Later, the Warrior of Light, along with Estinien, G'raha Tia, Alphinaud, and Alisaie, seek aid from the chained Tiamat. The appearance of the Telophoroi towers and a Lunar Bahamut was their primary concern, and the band sought assistance from Tiamat. Considering her previous successful attempt at summoning a Primal Bahamut, the Scions believed Tiamat had unique knowledge that may help.

Agreeing to help, Tiamat's chains are broken by the Warrior of Light, freeing her at last from confinement. She then joined the battle against Lunar Bahamut, aiding the adventurers in defeating him.

Hraesvelgr

Long ago, it is said that Hraesvelgr fell in love with an Elezen woman named Shiva. Due to the massive difference in the lifespans of dragons and mortals, the two were destined to be separated. To prevent this, Shiva asked Hraesvelgr to devour her soul, so that she may live on inside the dragon for eternity. Hraesvelgr eventually relented and did just that, forming an alliance between Elezen and dragons that lasted for two hundred years.

However, King Thordan I, in his quest for power, broke this alliance, slaying Hraesvelgr's sister, Ratatoskr, and stealing one of Nidhogg's eyes. Despite this, Hraesvelgr refused to join the Dragonsong War; the influence of Shiva's soul kept him calm and peaceful. Instead of joining the war, Hraesvelgr gave Nidhogg one of his own eyes to his furious brother, who had lost his to King Thordan I.

Nidhogg

Nidhogg, along with Hraesvelgr and Ratatosker, formed the Dravanian Horde, a massive group of dragons that took up residence in the mountains of Dravania. When King Thordan I slew Ratatoskr and defeated Nidhogg in battle, stealing one of his eyes, Nidhogg swore vengeance on Ishgard.

For the next thousand years, Nidhogg raged war against Ishgard, only pausing for brief periods to rest and regain his strength. His fight is renewed in the near-present when the Warrior of Light becomes entangled in the Dragonsong War.

Ratatoskr

After forming the Dravanian Horde with Hraesvelgr and Nidhogg, Ratatoskr and her brothers enjoyed a brief period of peace until King Thordan I attacked. Ratatsokr was slain in battle, and both of her eyes were ripped out and consumed by Thordan, ending the peace and crystalizing Nidhogg's resolve to get revenge.

Azdaja

Shortly after Bahamut's defeat, Tiamat asked Azdaja and their younger brother, Vrtra, to assist with the fight against the Allagans. They both accepted but were unable to push back the Voidsent forces that Emporer Xande had summoned. Finding no other solution, Azdaja flew into the portal from which the Voidsent were flooding in, attempting to seal the gate from within.

Although Azdaja was successful in resealing the Voidgate, she was trapped inside, leaving her alone in the Thirteenth Reflection, the homeworld of the Voidsent. She survived for some time before being captured by Golbez and his four Archfiends. The Archfiends drew energy from Azdaja's body to gain her power, but took only enough to keep the dragon alive.

Vrtra

Vrtra, unable to accept the loss of Azdaja, searched endlessly for a way to travel to the Thirteenth and find her. Eventually, he learned of a planar fissure beneath the waters of Thavnair. He then settled in the region, creating a familiar, called Alzadaal, to rule in his place, as the knowledge that a dragon lived in Thavnair could draw unwanted attention to himself.

Over time, Vrtra was able to widen the planar fissure enough so that he could walk through. However, on the other side, he was quickly overwhelmed by Voidsent. He was forced to escape back through the portal and seal it once again so that the Voidsent would not invade Etheirys as they did under Emporer Xande's command. Instead, Vrtra focused on governing Thavnair, until the Warrior of Light rediscovers the portal.

Although Vrtra is apprehensive at first about unsealing the portal, he eventually does and travels through it with the Warrior of Light and friends. There, they learn of Azdaja's capture by Golbez, and battle each of the four Archfiends. However, one of the four Archfiends, Rubicante, was able to destroy the portal while the Scions were distracted, denying them further entry into the Thirteenth and thus, yet again, putting Vrtra's quest to find his sister on hold.
