Summary
- Fallout modder MrHuu has gotten the original game running on the 3DS.
- All you need is a legal copy of the game and the console itself and you can try it out.
The original Fallout games can still be played today on Steam without too much hassle, but they've never made their way to consoles. Fans are changing that, bringing the first game in the series to... the now-defunct 3DS. Hey, it's a start.
"I've had the first Fallout for years, but it's always ran too crappy on my PC and I never get far, but this awesome 3DS port is running great (even if it is a little clunky having to cycle between left and right click with the L button)," one Reddit user posted. "Just have to install it, copy over files from your original, legally purchased copy, and you're good to go."
They're using a mod made by MrHuu which allows you to port your own copy of Fallout to the 3DS. As long as you have the game and console, you can do this for free.
The HUD, which is typically located on the bottom, can be moved to the top of the DS in its own dedicated screen. Instead of a mouse, you use a stylus to interact with the UI, but as OP notes, you have to switch between left and right mouse click with the L button.
You Can Also Play The Original Fallouts On Steam Deck And Mobile
If you don't have a 3DS lying around, there are other ways to make Fallout portable. You can download the second game on the Google Play Store, although it's probably best you also use a stylus - it can be a bit fiddly without one.
The upside to playing Fallout 2 on a phone is that you can slot your device into the Fallout 4 collector's edition Pip-Boy and play it from there.
Alternatively, if you have a Steam Deck, the original two games work pretty well on it. You can use the trackpad like a mouse, making the UI and HUD easier to navigate. Of course, it's far clunkier than just playing it on a PC.
