Ghouls will finally be playable in the Fallout series, as Fallout 76 will add them as an option in early 2025. This was just unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase, with a trailer giving us a brief look at the new character type in action.

In the more immediate future, Fallout 76 is getting a brand next expansion next week. Skyline Valley is launching on June 12 and adds the Shenandoah region to the map, expanding the area that players can explore. It also includes the new location of Vault 63, which contains a new type of ghoul called The Lost.

Playable Ghouls Coming To Fallout 76 In 2025

This news was just revealed in the Xbox Games Showcase, as part of Summer Game Fest. Here, we got a look at the future of the Bethesda MMO, including its next free expansion.

Skyline Valley is coming very soon, playable on all platforms from this Wednesday. It's the first expansion since the runaway success of the Fallout show and the ensuing boost to the game's player base, so it has a lot of fans, both new and old, to impress.

However, the big headline here is that we'll be able to play as ghouls next year. For whatever reason, the series has never offered this before. It was planned in the scrapped Fallout 3 that was in the works at Black Isle Studios, but Bethesda decided to omit this from its own take on the sequel. All these years later, each Fallout instalment has only ever let us play as a human, usually a vault dweller, even as more and more ghouls have been introduced to the lore.

Admittedly, now's a good time for playable ghouls to be rolled out. Walton Goggins' character from the Fallout show, Cooper Howard (or just The Ghoul), was a fan favourite, so it's likely that we'll see players make their own ghoul cowboys whenever the option is added. We'll have to wait and see when Bethesda is able to narrow the launch window down from just 2025, but at least we know that this long-sought-after feature is in development.

In the meantime, Skyline Valley will drop this coming Wednesday, alongside that new ghoul type, The Lost. We'll have to wait and see what their gimmick is, and how that sets them apart from the other ghouls we find across the wasteland.
