There are many Fallout games to choose from, but is Fallout 76 worth your time?
Posts 1As you spend more time in the world, you will start crafting items and ingredients to help you delve deeper into the more dangerous territories. Some items, such as fiber optics, are very valuable and can be especially difficult to find. Fibre optics are used for high-tech weapons and mods, usually of the laser weapon variety.
Updated June 7, 2024, by Andrew Scariati: Following Fallout 76's massive resurgence in popularity, there's never been a better time to farm fiber optics in Fallout 76. We've added a few more locations to search as you farm fiber optics in Appalachia.
What Are Fiber Optics?
Fallout 76's fiber optics are a rare crafting component found by breaking down certain high-tech items down into scrap.
To quickly break down your items into fiber optics, head to a Workbench and select the option to scrap all your junk.
These items will produce fiber optics when scrapped, so keep an eye out for them:

Where To Find Fiber Optics
There aretwo main ways that you can obtain Fallout 76's rare fiber optics.
The first is by scrapping items like microscopes, yielding a small amount of the material every time.
The other way is through killing specific enemies, and for this material, the best-yielding enemy to kill is the Fog Crawler.
The most consistent place to find Fog Crawler is at the Dabney Homestead.
This workshop is located far east of the map, close to Blake's Offering and the Valley Galeria.
You will know if the enemies have spawned as it will come up as a mission when you approach the workshop telling you to CLEAR OUT ENEMIES.
This will have three Fog Crawlers for you to kill, and on their bodies will be a varying number of fiber optic bundles.
These enemies are usually high-leveled and may be a challenge for you to defeat at low levels.
If you are too under-leveled to kill these creatures, you can always go for the slightly less efficient technique of finding items to scrap.
A good place to go hunting for fiber optics in Fallout 76 is the AVR Medical Center, located south of the map.
While here, find as many microscopes as possible, as these can be scrapped to give fiber optics.
You will need to head inside the building, giving you a loading screen.
This can be annoying as you will have to go through this loading screen every time you want to complete the route, but the value inside is worth it.
Head inside all the rooms, and there will be a microscope on most desks for you to pick up and then scrap.
In total, you can usually find seven microscopes once you've finished searching.
The yield on microscopes for fiber optic bundles is, on average, lower than what you would get for killing just three Fog Crawlers, but it is an alternative if you don't feel ready to take on the creatures.
If you aren't having luck at the AVR Medical Center, you can hunt for microscopes at West Tek research center or Morgantown Airport.
CloseYou can find five microscopes at West Tek by fighting through the labs and defeating the horde of FEV-fueled Super Mutants.
There are another three microscopes in the medical hanger in Morgantown Airport.
The last one can be found between the Freak Show and the monorail elevator. Search around for the remains of a scientist, where you should find a Biometric Scanner.
