Fable is easily one of the most promising games that Xbox has going for it at the moment, but just like the rest of its lineup of titles, it's undergone a few development struggles in the past. Not much seems to be going right at Xbox at the moment, which will hopefully change with new CEO Asha Sharma in charge, as mismanagement seems to be rife.

If a game isn't getting canceled, the developer itself is suffering immensely with massive layoffs and a gutted team, as was the case with Obsidian Entertainment and Doom developer ID. Games are running over budget, such as Arkane's Blade, bringing their supposed releases into question, and Fable is no exception.

Fable Is Reportedly Well Over Budget

In a new article from Windows Central reporter Jez Corden, discussing Xbox's multi-platform strategy, it's claimed that Fable is currently "uncomfortably" beyond budget ahead of its release in February. Of course, that's not the end of the world, and Fable is very unlikely to be scrapped this far into development, but it does bring into question the future of the series.

Games that are usually over budget will have to do exceptionally well to break even, and though we don't know Fable's intended budget, triple-A games can cost up to $400 million to make these days. That's a lot of copies that the game will need to sell, and considering God of War Laufey is now set to release the day before, it has major competition too.

If Fable doesn't break even or sell the amount of copies that Microsoft needs it to, it could very well take it as justification to forget about the Fable franchise for another 15 years. We'll have to see how it all shakes out, but a game being over budget for a company as scattershot with its future plans as Microsoft is not a good sign. Playground Games has seemingly managed to avoid a lot of the Xbox controversy recently, but if Fable underperforms, you have to start worrying about the studio's future too.
