Maja, Goddess of Life and Death is one of the optional bosses that you can encounter in Chapter 1. Defeating this boss is important as she is one of the NPCs that can join you in the Theater of the Masks hub upon defeat and is tied to several optional quests that can pay off incredible rewards, which can be extremely useful on your journey as the Maskless One.

Where To Find Maja, Goddess Of Life And Death

Defeating Maja requires you to battle against Vermiglio, The Red Prior, and Zanni, The First Mask. After you’ve defeated Zanni, The First Mask, and gained entry to the Theatre of the Masks hub, you can head to Maja’s chamber to find the Sacrificial Knife key item.

You can find Maja’s chamber by going right from the Theater of the Mask Knot. Her chamber resembles the Monastery of Maja area and is the first room you’ll come across in the hallway to the right.

After you’ve obtained the key item, head to the Crimson Cloister area, the Monastery of Maja in Chapter 1.

Accessing this area requires you to find the Key to the Crimson Cloister which can be found near the Melancholic Outlook Knot.

Once you have the key, you can head to the Crimson Cloister area to battle against Vermiglio, The Red Prior.

After defeating the boss, if you are carrying the Sacrificial Knife key item, you will be able to interact with the statue of Maja at the end of the hall, allowing you to travel to the Old Sanctuary, where you’ll find Maja, Goddess of Life and Death.

Maja, Goddess Of Life And Death's Attacks

Maja hits incredibly hard, but if you’ve fought the other bosses in Chapter 1 so far, you will be able to manage just fine. Despite hitting hard, Maja is quite easy to stagger with a greatsword weapon and takes increased damage from the Gratia element due to her affinity with the Fatuo element.

Due to a variety of attacks that are either difficult or impossible to parry, you will have to resort to dodging and moving around a lot during this boss battle.

How To Avoid

Rapid Fire Orbs Of Fatuo

Maja unleashes several magical projectiles, one after the other, in quick succession.

These orbs can be parried, but you have to be extremely precise with the timing because if you fail to parry one, you might get hit by the rest. The easiest way to avoid this attack is to sprint to the side.

Fountain Of Maja

If she summons her staff during the first half of the fight, it is either going to be this attack or the Blast of Maja. In this attack, Maja summons a fountain of Fatuo energy three times from the ground. Getting hit by the fountain will knock you down and if you do not immediately get up, you will get hit by the second attack, and most likely die.

You can see the red spot on the ground right before the fountain is about to erupt. Dodge in any direction after you’ve seen the red spot on the ground to avoid the fountain. Do it three times to completely avoid this attack.

Blast Of Maja

This attack comes out after a short delay. Maja will unleash a blast of Fatuo energy, that covers a small area around her. After the blast, the area will be covered in red smoke for a while.

During the delay before the attack, move away or dodge to the back to avoid getting hit by this attack. The red smoke doesn’t deal any damage.

Shockwaves Of Maja

Maja will hold her staff in both of her hands and raise it thrice, unleashing three shockwaves of Fatuo energy on the ground. The shockwaves cover the entire arena.

If you get hit by one of these shockwaves, it becomes extremely difficult to avoid the rest. The best way to deal with this attack is to create some distance and jump over each shockwave to avoid all damage.

Beam Swipe

Like Vermiglio, The Red Prior, Maja also has a beam attack. You can recognize this attack where she creates an orb of Fatuo energy between her hands. Maja will often swipe the beam to her left.

This attack is incredibly difficult to avoid perfectly. You can try dodging to your left to try to avoid it since she swipes the beam to your right. However, you might still get hit by the initial straight-beam attack.

Giant Orb Of Maja

Maja summons a giant orb of Fatuo energy and raises it above her head. The orb sends out several projectiles in Maskless One’s direction, before crashing down on the player by itself and dealing Fatuo damage in the AOE.

The simplest way to avoid this attack is to sprint to your back and dodge repeatedly to avoid the wave-like projectile attacks, and then sprint away to avoid the giant orb.

How To Defeat Maja, Goddess Of Life And Death

While some of Maja’s attacks are quite difficult to avoid perfectly, defeating her is rather easy if you don’t let her attack you at all. Using a Mask Line or the heavy attack of a greatsword or any colossal weapon can immediately interrupt Maja, stopping her from attacking you.

Maja will mostly keep walking around, throwing attacks once in a while. She doesn’t pressure you like some other bosses in the game, and her moveset isn’t as huge.

Keep interrupting her with a heavy attack to fill her Unraveling bar and once she becomes Unraveled, you can use your Finishing Attack to deal a considerable amount of damage.

Using a greatsword weapon that deals Gratia damage, such as the Blessed Rapier is a good choice in this boss battle. Furthermore, Mask Lines that inflict Gratia damage, such as Meteoric Impact, can also be extremely useful.

Make sure your weapon is at least +5 so you can deal enough damage to her with your attacks. Putting at least 20 points in the Bruiser’s Virtue is also recommended since it allows you to endure a couple of her attacks without dying.

Due to most of her attacks inflicting Wicked, Maja will be able to heal herself with every attack that she’s able to land on you. You will have to keep an eye on the status effect and ensure you also have enough healing to last the entire fight.

Equipping the Guise of Zanni, which grants you extra Armonia charges, and using the Inner Abundance perk that heals you for casting a Mask Line are some of the options that you can use to increase your survivability.

Rewards For Defeating Maja, Goddess Of Life And Death

Defeating Maja, Goddess of Life and Death, rewards you with a Shard of Dear Memory and a Blazing Efestite Geode, alongside 66,712 Memoria.

Once you have defeated Maja, she will later appear in her chamber inside the Theater of the Masks where you found the Sacrificial Knife Key Item, and you will be able to continue her questline.
