PostsCurtis, Prince of Laughter, is the first boss that you’ll encounter after the tutorial. This boss tests everything that you’ve learned so far, and you’ll have to show your mastery of the game mechanics to come out victorious against him. Fortunately, once you’ve figured out his moves, he’s fairly easy to deal with.
How To Find Curtis, Prince Of Laughter
Curtis, Prince of Laughter can be found near the Church of Maja Knot in the town inside the Quinta region. To reach this area, you have to cross the Field of Beginnings and travel through the Lesser Commons area till you reach this location.
At the Church of Maja Knot, you will find Pulcinella sitting at a barrel next to a door. If you talk to him, he will say something about going forward and causing chaos. Once you open that door, you’ll begin the boss battle against Curtis, Prince of Laughter.
Battle Preparations To Beat Curtis, Prince Of Laughter
The boss hits hard, and focuses on combo attacks, giving you much less time to retaliate. Equipping a Longsword for this fight is recommended so you can execute several attacks in the short time you get after doing a successful parry or dodging one of his attacks before the next one comes out.
Using the Juniper Longsword for this boss battle is likely the best option as it is one of the best Longswords you can acquire early on.
There is also an Equipment Enhancement area right beside the Church of Maja Knot, allowing you to enhance your weapon of choice. If you’ve been exploring thoroughly, you might be able to easily enhance your weapon of choice to +3, which can drastically make the fight easier.
Among Perks, anything that enhances your Finishing Attacks, such as the Path of Trickery and Path of Fury perks are great options to use for this fight, as most of your damage will likely be coming from dealing the Finishing Attacks after Unraveling the boss.
Curtis, Prince Of Laughter Attacks
Curtis, Prince of Laughter, usually uses combo attacks that are fairly easy to recognize and parry. Description
How To Avoid
Charge Attack
The boss will charge at you, closing the distance quickly, and smashing his polearm on the ground.
You can simply avoid this attack by dodging to your sides. You can also parry this attack fairly easily and execute a few hits before the boss starts to do his next attack.
Two Swings Into Thrust Combo
The boss will raise the weapon in one hand, attacking the Maskless One with a right-to-left swing, and then a left-to-right swing. The third attack is a thrust attack and the boss may sometimes not execute it.
You can avoid the swings by dodging to your back and creating some distance between you and the boss. For the thrust attack, you’ll have to dodge to the side.
Feint Attack
Curtis, Prince of Laughter will start swinging his sword from his right, only to stop halfway and do the swing from his left side.
This attack is incredibly slow, and you can get a couple of hits in before the attack connects. Dodge to your back to avoid the swing.
Polearm Slam
After you’ve taken out half of his HP, the boss is telegraphed to do this move where he smashes the base of his polearm on the ground twice, dealing damage in a small area. After the attack, the boss will have a shield imbued with Vis, alongside the polearm.
This attack is fairly difficult to avoid due to it covering a small area, and sometimes you may get clipped by it while dodging to the sides. The best way to avoid this is to simply sprint away when you know this attack is coming.
Shield Bash
Curtis, Prince of Laughter will run at you, swinging his shield in a parrying motion. If you get hit by it, it will build up the Dizzy status effect. The boss may do a follow-up strike in some cases.
Whenever the boss has the shield in his hand, and he starts running towards you, it is most likely this attack. You can easily avoid it by dodging to the sides. Dodge again to your right or your back to avoid the follow-up attack.
Running Slash
Whenever you try to retreat and heal, the boss will likely throw this attack where he charges at you rapidly to throw a quick swing.
Just keep in mind that he has this attack in his arsenal whenever you try to back off and heal. After popping off the heal, it's best to throw a dodge to your back as quickly as possible.
Vis Slash
The boss will do a large swing of his polearm, inflicting Vis if it hits the player.
This attack has a decent range and dodging might get you clipped. Jumping is a better way of avoiding this attack.
Three Thrusts Combo
Curtis, Prince of Laughter, will thrust his polearm twice in quick succession, and then a third thrust after a short delay.
You can avoid each thrust by dodging to the sides. Be wary of the third delayed attack as it will allow the boss to realign himself if you keep dodging around him, so you will have to watch your timing.

The best way to beat this boss is to stay in his face and parry all of his attacks during the first phase. Watch his hand, and parry exactly as the hand is about to connect with you. Most of his attacks are fairly easy to parry during the first phase.
After you’ve taken half of his HP out, the boss will start moving a lot and some of his new attacks become a lot more difficult to parry. You will have to also move around and dodge consistently. Recognize which attacks can be parried and which attacks you’ll have to dodge.
The best way to recognize which attacks to dodge is by watching the polearm. If the polearm is infused with Vis, it's better to simply focus on dodging instead of parrying.
Use Mask Lines only when you have staggered the boss or after successfully dodging or parrying his combo attacks, as they have a longer recovery duration for the boss. If you try using the Mask Lines in other situations, you will likely get hit.
