Summary

  • Elon Musk has said that he plans on using xAI to set up an AI game studio, claiming too many studios are owned by "massive corporations".
  • Musk, who owns several massive corporations, claimed on Twitter earlier today that he wants to use this AI game studio to "make games great again".
  • It's unclear if Musk is serious about this project, but if he is, then game developers worried over generative AI practice will likely have cause for concern.

Elon Musk is a bit of a gamer - that much is true. He often posts his unfiltered opinions about certain titles via his Twitter account, most infamously his horrific Elden Ring build, and he loves them so much that he allegedly threatened Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red with an antique gun during one of Grimes' recording sessions to try and get a cameo appearance in the game.

Whether we like it or not, he's a gamer through and through, but it now seems like the billionaire may be getting ready to step into game development too. In a recent post to Twitter, Musk made the claim that far too many game studios are owned by "massive corporations" these days, and says that he's going to set up an AI game studio to "make games great again".

Elon Musk Is Planning To Set Up An AI Game Studio

More specifically, Musk says that xAI (his artificial intelligence firm) will set up the game studio, though whether he's actually serious about these plans is another matter entirely. A random declaration in a throwaway tweet isn't really enough to confirm that these plans are actually in motion, though it wouldn't be all that surprising given the billionaire's love of the medium.

Elon Musk also owns several "massive corporations".

If Musk is serious about this game studio, then that will be a concern for many game developers out there that are already trying to push back against generative AI in video games. Whether it be generative AI for voice acting or art, its practice is widely hated by the majority of the games industry, with video game actors union SAG-AFTRA's strike over the use of AI still ongoing.

It's still early doors though, and we're yet to see any meaningful announcement from Musk or xAI about this supposed game studio. Right now, it's just Musk's slightly nonsensical ramblings on Twitter, and we know from his proposed cage fight with Mark Zuckerberg that not everything he says there actually ends up happening.
