The Scadutree Avatar is an optional boss that can be fairly tricky to fight against, especially if you’re running a melee build, as it can inflict Bleed quite easily with its thorns. However, with careful preparations and the correct strategy, you can easily defeat this boss and get your hands on its Remembrance and Miquella’s Great Rune.

How To Find Scadutree Avatar

You can find the Scadutree Avatar in the Church District area of the Shadow Keep. If you haven’t made your way this far yet, you will have to start at the Moorth Ruins and make your way to the Bonny Village first.

From there, you head towards the Church District area. Once you have reached the location, you’ll have to progress further and pull the lever to drain the water completely.

If you want more specific instructions about how to reach these specific areas, please visit our Church District guide.

Once the water is drained out, you can rest at the Sunken Chapel Site of Grace, and make your way towards the Tree Worship Passage Site of Grace leading to the boss arena.

You may encounter the Ulcerated Tree Spirit after draining the water out of the Church District, but defeating it isn’t required to face the Scadutree Avatar.

How To Prepare To Fight The Scadutree Avatar

The Scadutree Avatar will be using many attacks that can cause thorns to erupt from the ground. These thorns will inflict Bleed build-up on you, so it’s best to equip an armor set that raises your Robustness, such as the General Radahn Armor set.

You can also equip the Mottled Necklace +2 Talisman, which increases Robustness alongside Immunity and Focus, making you more resistant to Bleed.

Like the Erdtree Avatars, the Scadutree Avatar is also vulnerable to Fire. If you’re using a Faith build, it is highly recommended to use Fire or Frenzied Flame Incantations. You can also use the Hefty Fire Pots craftable item for considerable damage.

For Sorcerers, this boss may prove slightly less challenging because you don’t have to get too close to the Scadutree Avatar, which also saves you from some of his thorn attacks. it's best to repeatedly cast Cometwhile staying at a safe distance.

If you’re using a Sorcerer or any ranged build, aim for the Sunflower’s head, as it will deal a lot more damage.

Melee users can benefit greatly from a shield. Most of his attacks can be easily blocked with a shield, and even if you get hit by the thorns, the shield absorbs most of the damage. Furthermore, any weapon with Fire affinity or Ash of War, such as Ash of War: Flame Skewer or Ash of War: Flame of the Redmanes, can be highly effective against this boss.

The Scadutree Avatar is immune to Bleed and inflicting it with Poison, or Scarlet Rot is not worth it due to its multiple phases. However, it is vulnerable to Frostbite, which can be triggered quickly to take the boss down faster.

How To Fight The Scadutree Avatar

As you enter the boss arena for the first time, you’ll have to approach the dried Sunflower in the middle of the swamp to trigger the boss fight. After the first attempt, the boss will attack you as soon as you enter its arena.

Unlike most bosses, the Scadutree Avatar has three phases, each with a complete health bar. With each phase, the boss will start using some new attacks, but overall, the strategy for defeating it remains the same.

Try to not use your Flask of Crimson Tears early in the boss battle — you will need them later during harder phases.

Phase One

As you enter the boss arena, the Scadutree Avatar will shoot two streams of thorns in your direction, which will cause Bleed build-up on you. You can avoid this attack by rolling to the side.

Once you’ve gotten close enough, the boss may swing around its branches to attack you, which can be dodged by rolling in any direction at the correct time. You can also simply block this attack with a shield.

Sometimes the boss may also swing its branches around, but often they’ll be covered in thorns. Scadutree Avatar usually uses this attack when you’re in mid-range. This attack will launch waves of thorns in your direction. It can be dodged by rolling in a direction that is perpendicular to the wave of thorns.

If you hit the Sunflower with a melee attack, it may slam it on the ground to shake you off. You can easily predict this attack by the animation where the Scadutree Avatar rolls his head back a little, preparing to slam it on the ground. Dodge this attack by rolling or jumping to the back.

The Scadutree Avatar will also slam both of its branches into the ground, causing thorns to erupt out of the ground. This attack is fairly tricky to dodge, and you’ll have to roll multiple times to the back to get out of its range.

Once you’ve depleted all of its HP, Scadutree Avatar will stagger, and you’ll have to get closer to its head to launch a critical hit and defeat it.

Phase Two

After you’ve defeated the Scadutree Avatar once, it will respawn in the middle of the swamp again. Right as it respawns, it will start charging in your direction repeatedly. You can easily block this attack every time with a shield, or by rolling forward at the correct time.

When the Sunflower rolls back and starts to glow, be wary as the boss might be about to cast the Incantation, Land of Shadow. This Incantation creates several golden projectiles that will follow you. The best way to dodge this attack is by rolling exactly when the projectiles are about to hit you.

After you’ve depleted all of its HP again, it will stagger, and you’ll have to approach it again to launch a critical hit to defeat its second phase.

Phase Three

During the third phase, most of its attacks remain the same. However, shortly after it respawns, its stem will start to glowand it will launch a highly damaging attack within a specific radius. The best way to deal with this attack is to just run away from the Scadutree Avatar whenever you see its stem glow and try to dodge the lasers.

The Scadutree Avatar may use this attack multiple times during the battle. Sometimes this attack will not stop after just one explosion, so you’ll have to wait it out. Once it has finished casting this spell, it will get exhaustedfor a short duration, where you can approach and attack it.

What To Do With The Remembrance Of The Shadow Sunflower

Defeating the Scadutree Avatar rewards the player with the Remembrance of the Shadow Sunflower, Miquella’s Great Rune, and260,000 runes.

The Remembrance of the Shadow Sunflower can be traded with Enia at the Roundtable Hold for the Shadow Sunflower Blossom Colossal Weapon or the Land of Shadow Incantation.

The Shadow Sunflower Blossom scales with Strength, Dexterity, and Faith. The weapon deals Physical and Holy Damage and comes with Shadow Sunflower Headbutt Ash of War. On the other hand, the Land of Shadow Incantation requires 58 Faith and uses up one Spell Slot.

Other than that, Miquella’s Great Rune can be useful if you haven’t completed the DLC’s main story quest. The item allows you to nullify the effects of the final boss' grab attack, which would otherwise cause the fight to end if you get grabbed twice.
