Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree - Rellana, Twin Moon Knight Boss Guide

FromSoftware has gained a reputation with their Souls games for being excruciatingly difficult, while simultaneously giving birth to a new breed of challenge runs where players beat those excruciatingly difficult bosses under harsher conditions. Shadow of the Erdtree might put all of that to the test.

PostsWhile Rellana, Twin Moon Knight may not be the first major boss you fight, she will be early on and she is absolutely a major skill check. Massive combo strings and multiple elements make her a true menace to master. Never fear, however, we are here to help you find victory against her.
Where To Find Rellana, Twin Moon Knight
Rellana is the final boss of Castle Ensis. This area is found across the Ellac Greatbridge in the Gravesite Plains and bars greater access into Scadu Altus until you beat her.
Mind you, with a bit of a detour to the south, you can find a sealed spiritspring that launches you into Scadu Altus by the Fort of Reprimand.
Rellana herself can't be missed. Once you find the Castle-Lord's Chambers site of grace, she is immediately up the stairs past the mist gate and is the only named boss of Castle Ensis.
Recommended Build Against Rellana
For your own defences, you'll want a healthy mix of magic, fire, and ice resistance to keep you going after a few of her hits. With how long her attack chains go on for, you'll want to invest a decent amount into Endurance as well to make sure you have the stamina to keep dodging.
Here's a few more recommendations:
- Get a Scadutree Blessing level of at least three.
- Mix magic and physical resisting materials in the Wondrous Physick.
- Don't be afraid to summon Needle Knight Leda and your own Spirit Ashes. A win is a win.
- Bring a continual damage ability like Blood Loss, Bloodflame, etc. to get some extra chip damage on her.
- For a Sorcery/Incantation build, bring spells that can be fired off quickly to reduce your own downtime but increase damage while at a distance.
With all of this prep under your belt, beating Rellana should come naturally. Keep at it and you'll eventually conquer the Twin Moon Knight.
How To Beat Rellana, Twin Moon Knight
Despite Rellana being one of the earlier bosses of Shadow of the Erdtree, that doesn't mean she'll go easy on you. She is fast and has combo strings with upwards of five attacks that she can delay and swap between as she wishes.
She can also check you at a distance as well, using magic glintstone swords to track you. She has all her bases covered, has high damage, high poise, and terrifyingly high HP.
Rellana is a boss you need to take slowly. She won't give you time to cast long spells or pull off long combos with her, so it's more about learning her combos and whittling her down in her short moments of rest.
Rellana Moveset
Rellana's boss battle is split across two phases, entering her second phase once she reaches around 50 percent HP. At this point, she will coat both of her swords in fire and ice respectively, unlocking new moves for you to contend with. Below is a list of her moves to prepare yourself.
Phase
Attack
Attack Description
Counter
1
Dual Attack Chain
Rellana gets close and continually attacks you with each sword individually. She only attacks with one sword at a time unless her combo is ending, so read her animations closely to see if another is coming
Stay close to her and keep dodging. This will give you a chance to get in some hits once the combo chain stops.
1
Closing Swipe
Rellana dashes forward while swinging with one sword to close the gap between you and her.
She'll only use this when you're at a distance from her, so maintain your position and let her close the gap. This gives you more time to prep.
1
Seeking Glintstone Swords
Rellana summons a series of Glintstone swords that immediately charge after you. This is typically done while healing or summoning Spirit Ashes
If attempting to heal or summon, make sure you're as far away from Rellana as possible. Not far enough and her swords will reach you before you can finish healing.
1
Summoned Glintstone Swords
Just like the seeking swords, but they hover over her head for a period before seeking you.
These she can summon whenever and will fire independently of her own attacks. Keep an eye on them while close so you can dodge them. They typically only last a few seconds.
1
Pincer Dash
Rellana dashes in an arc around you trying to break your lock on her and catch you off guard. This can also continue into her regular attack chain.
Never be stationary with Rellana. The best way to avoid ever losing track of her is to always aim to be closer to her back. This will make it harder for her dash to break your lock-on.
2
Moon Wave
Rellana will fire off a ranged arc from her sword to attack you at range.
The arc shoots vertically, so dodging to the sides is the most effective means of avoiding it. Being close to her when she does it also gives you a chance to get a few hits in as she recovers.
2
Fire Slash
Rellana will perform her regular Dual Attack Chain though this time with fire spewing from some attacks to give them extra range. The final slash will also have a delayed explosion.
Same as her normal attacks, dodge into and around them to avoid them. dodging backwards puts you at risk of getting hit by the flame wave.
2
Eruption
Rellana will stop in place and coat herself in flames before stabbing her flaming sword into the ground and causing continual plumes of fire to erupt around her.
This move is well telegraphed so it is easy to avoid, though hard to close in on Rellana. Ranged moves are the way to go here.
2
Twin Moons
Rellana will hover in the air and summon her twin moons. Both will fire in quick succession causing an arena-wide explosion before Rellana follows up with a third explosion herself.
There's very little chance of outrunning this attack, so your best chance of surviving is to put some distance between you and Rellana once she starts hovering, and either dodge or jump once the moons hit the floor.
She has a a relatively small moveset though can weave many of her moves into each other. Watching how she moves is the most important means of surviving this battle.
Rellana's Strengths And Weaknesses
Rellana comes with hefty defences of her own, wielding magic, fire, and ice without any significant weaknesses. That said, aside from those three elements, she has no other particular resistances either.
Any weapon will do good against her, though you'll want to prioritise faster weapons to keep up with her own speed. She has decent poise so while she is possible to stagger and riposte, a heavy weapon might not be enough to interrupt her regular attacks.
Rellana is also vulnerable to blood loss, though you may struggle to land enough hits on her to get it to proc. That said, it's a safe affinity to have for some extra damage.
What To Do With The Remembrance Of The Twin Moon Knight
Upon the defeat of Rellana, she will drop her remembrance, the Remembrance of the Twin Moon Knight. You could use it just for the runes, though that would be a bit of a waste. Instead, you can bring it to Enia in the Roundtable Hold like you would any other Remembrance and get one of two items from it.
The first of these is Rellana's Twinblade. This is a Light Greatsword, a new weapon type introduced in Shadow of the Erdtree. You wield only one of the swords normally, though you utilise both while dual-wielding them.
The unique Ash of War, Moon-and-Fire Stance, allows you to use both elements depending on whether you use a light or heavy attack with the Ash of War. It also has equal scaling across Strength, Dexterity, Faith, and Intelligence making it a diverse but demanding weapon.
The second is Rellana's Twin Moons. This is a Sorcery much like the one Rellana uses in the boss battle herself. It fires off two moon projectiles in quick succession, each slamming into the ground for a large area-of-effect detonation. It is a powerful but demanding sorcery with an FP cost of 47 and an Intelligence requirement of 70.
If you have used all of the Walking Mausoleums in the base game, there are new opportunities to duplicate in the Realm of Shadow, though they are still limited.
