Summary

  • You can't rematch boss fights in Elden Ring unless you start New Game Plus or get summoned to help a host.
  • Fans propose adding a PvE option to the Colosseum for revisiting previous bosses and tough enemies.
  • Alternatively, FromSoftware could bring back the Bonfire Aesthetic from Dark Souls 2.

Sure, Messmer is a tough son of a divine sovereign, but maybe you wanna fight him again with a new build and try some different tactics. The only way to do that in Elden Ring is to A) enter New Game Plus, B) make a new save file, or C) get summoned to help someone else.

Fans have a much better solution. As Hexent_Armana suggests, FromSoftware could add a PvE mode to the Colosseum.

"Please give us an option to fight previous bosses and difficult enemies again in the colosseums," they posted to over 16,000 upvotes. Clearly, it's a popular idea. "They don't need to drop their usual loot. Runes and other rare but minor items like Larval Tears would be fine rewards."

Alternatively, FromSoft Could Bring Back Bonfire Aesthetics

Soulsborne games don't just share the same fundamental mechanics, but the same fundamental items. Whether it's Bloodborne, Dark Souls, or Elden Ring, you'll find equivalents to Homeward Bones, Estus Flasks, and even Prism Stones.

Dark Souls 2 introduced a game changer of an item ten years ago, the Bonfire Aesthetic. Burned at a checkpoint, it increases that area's New Game Plus ranking by one (up to seven, everything after is the same difficulty).

Enemies become more difficult, bosses respawn, and any new loot from that increased level is added to the area. The catch is that if you burn a Bonfire Aesthetic, entering New Game Plus for real increases that area's ranking again. So, you might be in NG+2, but the Abyss would be in NG+3.

This item never appeared in any shape or form in future FromSoftware games, but as many fans in the comments point out, it's the perfect solution for players who want a rematch. You could respawn Messmer and fight him again and again and again, but each time he would be even tougher. You'd really have to earn those Runes.
