The 2007 Michael Bay Transformers movie was many people's first introduction to the franchise. But Transformers has actually been a thing since the 1980s, with the popular Hasbro toy line. Naturally, the success of these toys led to more than 25 series about the adventures of these Autobots.

But, since 2007, six more movies have been released, with two of them being prequels to the five-film franchise. If you're confused about the order in which to watch these movies, you're not alone. Today, we'll provide you with the chronological order in which to watch the current Transformer movies and provide services where you rent/stream them from. Ready? Let's begin!

Where To Watch All Transformers Movies

There's nothing worse than beginning a movie series only to realize the platform only has a few entries. So, for your convenience, here are a few places to watch all the Transformers movies before we start the chronological list.

  • Google Play Movies
  • Apple TV+
  • Vudu
  • YouTube Movies

1. Bumblebee (2018)

Bumblebee is the first movie to watch in chronological order since it's set in 1987. It starts at the beginning of the Autobot journey, with B-127 (Bumblebee) being sent to Earth to scout the planet during the Cybertron Civil War.

Charlie, the protagonist, who has recently lost her father, meets Bumblebee, who suffers from a robotic kind of amnesia. Needless to say, it's a journey of self-discovery for both of them and is a welcome change of pace from the regular format of a Transformers film.

2. Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts (2023)

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is the second film to watch as the events occur in 1994, a few years after what transpired in Bumblebee. If we treat this as a rebooted timeline, you'll be introduced to everyone again (which kind of happened in Bumblebee; maybe the audience is affected by the same amnesia as our beloved yellow Autobot).

The premise of this film is that the Autobots are looking for a way to return home, and an archaeologist from Brooklyn accidentally activates a key that will allow them to do that. This, in turn, results in the two protagonists (Elena Wallace and Noah Diaz) becoming embroiled in an ancient galactic war.

3. Transformers (2007)

Although this film started the movie franchise, it's actually third chronologically and takes place in the same year it was released: 2007. The film follows Sam Witwicky, who gets a car for his birthday. That car happens to be an Autobot, Bumblebee. Sam's grandfather unknowingly involved his family in the search for the AllSpark, which the Autobots and the Decepticons are looking for.

Since the directors and writers didn't plan for future prequels, the movie has the Autobots arrive on Earth again. If you can ignore that, then the rest of the film makes contextual sense in chronological order.

4. Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (2009)

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the fourth movie to watch, as the events occur two years after the 2007 film. In this movie, Sam kept a shard of the AllSpark, which the Decepticons need to revive Megatron and his superior, The Fallen.

The Decepticons also need Sam's mind since it contains information about the location of The Harvester, which, if enabled, will destroy Earth. It's now up to Sam to stay alive and for the Autobots, who are now working with NEST, to prevent that from happening.

5. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon (2011)

The chronological story continues with Transformers: The Dark of the Moon, which follows Sam, who has now finished college and is searching for a job. The Autobots find Sentinel Prime, the Autobot leader, and learn of a way to defeat the Decepticons for good. However, everything is not as it seems, and it may be up to Sam to uncover the truth before it's too late. Much like the previous titles, the movie is great fun and reveals a bit more about the history of Autobots on Earth.

6. Transformers: Age Of Extinction (2014)

Transformers: Age of Extinction occurs sometime after the previous film's events. However, the Autobots are no longer the favored heroes they once were and are being hunted down by a bounty hunter in search of Optimus Prime. As an ancient enemy emerges, the Autobots seek the help of a struggling inventor to prevent a worldwide war that could threaten all life on Earth.

Again, more context about the history of the Autobots/Decepticons is revealed, and again, their history is creatively intertwined with Earth's history.

7. Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)

This is the final film to be watched in chronological order and is also the last film in the five-film franchise. It's quite the grand finale, as we now see a brainwashed version of Optimus Prime known as Nemesis Prime. He is hunting for Merlin's staff, which can restore Cybertron by absorbing Earth's energy.

What's cool about this film is the characters from the previous films join the battle, so it's quite nostalgic. Almost nostalgic-inducing enough to make you want to rewatch the films.
