Drakes are one such beast that will require preparation and guile if you seek the glory of victory against these powerful foes. While every drake encounter will be different, there are certain elements that all will share, and identifying these moments will put you in control of the fight. Learn to time your attacks and stay well-positioned against drakes.

What Are Drakes?

Drakes are the lesser dragons of Dragon's Dogma 2 and are differentiated by their name as only the true dragon can be referred to as such.

They inhabit both Battahl and Vermund, therefore you will meet these beasts throughout your journey.

Keep an eye on large clearings, particularly near rivers or mountains, as a drake may be perched nearby.

See if you can spot their wings flapping in the distance, then head in that direction.

These creatures are extremely strong, boasting the ability to fly, spew fire from their mouths, and unleash catastrophic meteor showers onto the battlefield.

Come prepared for a difficult battle, and be sure you have a Mage to heal and bolster the group's defensive and offensive abilities.

How To Kill Drakes

Close

Drakes may be terrifying, but they can be defeated using a blade or magick, just like any other of the hardest enemies in Dragon's Dogma 2.

As you head into battle against a drake, you should consider three important strategic factors to stay safe and win the fight:

  1. Position yourself out of striking distance when possible
  2. Wait for the drake to reveal its weakness – a glowing spot on its chest
  3. Run when the drake charges an attack that paints targets on the battlefield

The most important part of battling a drake is learning to approach it as a battle of attrition: you don't want to die, and eventually, you will do enough damage to kill the drake.

During a drake's charged attack, it will collect glowing power in its claws, indicating that a shower of hellfire is about to rain on you from above.

Dodge and run while this attack is in progress as the damage it will inflict might kill you before you can even heal yourself.

To kill a drake, you must continue to slash it and hurl spells until it is damaged enough to reveal the glowing weak spot on its chest.

Stay near the drake's hind legs and damage it from that position to avoid its claws and fire breath.

Once the weak spot is exposed, this is your opportunity to deal major damage to a drake, as this weak spot will sustain much more harm than usual with every hit.

Cling onto the drake's weak spot or stand in front of it to repeatedly slash it until you run out of stamina.

If you're a Thief, then you can do major damage with a final use of Draw and Quarter.

Drakes will also take more damage from ice attacks, so imbue your weapons with Ice Affinity from Mages, or use Ice attacks, like the Frigor spell, to inflict extra damage.

Attacking a drake with powerful Skills is much easier when it is on the ground, save for Magick Archers or Sorcerers, who can inflict solid amounts of damage at range, even against mighty drakes.

Follow the cycle of doing damage, running away from powerful attacks, and waiting until the heart is exposed to strike and kill drakes easily in Dragon's Dogma 2.

What Rewards Do You Get From Killing Drakes?

As a reward for the great amount of time and effort it took you to defeat a mighty drake, you'll be rewarded with material from your fallen foe:

  1. Wyrmslife Crystal
  2. Dragon Scale

The Wyrmslife Crystals are your primary bounty from these encounters and will be received in various quantities (usually 20-75) depending on the strength of the drake defeated.

Wyrmslife Crystals can be exchanged with the Dragonforged, an NPC you will discover later on in your journey through Battahl.

The Dragonforged offers Portcrystals, Ferrystones, and an Unmaking Arrow, which can instantly defeat any foe.

Dragon Scales can be used to upgrade certain rare pieces of equipment, which will become available for purchase during the game's final sequence.

The rewards are extremely rare, so be sure to use them wisely, or you'll have to return to hunting drakes to replenish your supply of Wyrmslife Crystals and Dragon Scales.
