But let's say you've managed to find the Sphinx and are curious if you can battle this magnificent beast. Surely, you can expect a tough fight, but it's unlike any other encounter in the game. This is the Sphinx, after all, and everything to her is a game of wits. So, if you want to beat her, you'll need a specific approach.

How To Beat The Sphinx

Let's start by saying that the Sphinx never attacks you. When you interact with her, she simply asks you to play a game of wits, which includes a series of riddles you need to solve.

However, let's say your curiosity gets the better of you and you attack her. Initially, she won't retaliate. But if you persist in attacking her, that's when she gets angry and turns into a boss fight.

The Sphinx is a formidable opponent in this boss fight, employing various magic attacks. She unleashes lightning waves, teleports around the battlefield, and flies while hurling projectiles from her wings.

Additionally, she uses fire and ice attacks, and sometimes she may even swoop down with force while flying.

While you may have a strong Arisen and a formidable party with you, capable of surviving the fight, at a certain point, the Sphinx will abruptly cease the battle and escape, leaving you hanging. This is an indirect riddle you must contend with if you wish to defeat her, and we'll tell you how to solve it.

Firstly, you'll need a special arrow called the Unmaking Arrow, and there are two ways to acquire it.

  • If you've been following the Game of Wits quest from the Sphinx, during one of her riddles, the Riddle of Recollection at her second location, completing it correctly will grant you one.
  • If you haven't been participating in the Sphinx's riddles, you'll need to locate the Dragonforged. He can be found northeast of Bakbattahl and he'll sell you an Unmaking Arrow for eight Wyrmslife Crystals.

Wyrmslife Crystals are drops from Drakes, formidable dragons that are not easily defeated. Their weak spot is their exposed heart on the chest, so you'll want to focus your attacks there.

Depending on how you obtained the Unmaking Arrow, you'll need to switch your vocation to either an Archer or a Warfarer and equip a bow. Then, return to the Sphinx's location, whether it's her first location, the Mountain Shrine, or her second, the Frontier Shrine.

Believe it or not, you don't even need to provoke the Sphinx to defeat her; it's a game of wits, after all. All you have to do is equip the Unmaking Arrow from your menu to your bow and aim for her wings. Yes, that's right; just one shot to the wing with that arrow will be enough to defeat the Sphinx.

After a short cutscene, the Sphinx will drop some money along with the Key of Sagacity. This key can be used to unlock the big golden chest behind her and acquire the Eternal Wakestone.
