Summary

  • Mr. President! tasks players with protecting Donald Trump from assassination attempts.
  • A real-life assassination attempt on Trump has renewed interest in the game on Steam as it rockets up the trending list.

Mr. President! is a game in which you, a bulletproof bodyguard called Dick "Rock-Hard" Johnson, must dive in front of Donald Trump to protect him from assassins. It was released in 2016 before his inauguration as President, but is now trending eight years later on Steam following the real assassination attempt that took place over the weekend.

As reported by the Associated Press, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, a registered Republican, shot Donald Trump from a rooftop only 164 yards away from where he was speaking during an election rally. Crooks missed when Trump turned his head, leaving Trump with a bloodied ear. However, he did kill a bystander who "dove on his family to protect them" and injured two other men.

Crooks also brought explosives in his vehicle, though it's unclear what his intentions or motivations were.

According to SteamDB, the game has spiked to the top of the trending tab, beating out Cyberpunk 2077. One look at the reviews and you'll see myriad new players referencing Saturday's events; "Predicted the future," reads one. "Based on true events," says another. "Aged like fine wine," the list goes on. There was a spike of 222 positive reviews on July 13/14, up from just one on July 12.

Donald Trump To Continue Election Rally Despite Assassination Attempt

As reported by the BBC, Donald Trump said that he is "supposed to be dead", claiming he turned at just the right time to avoid the bullet doing serious damage.

The FBI believes Crooks acted alone, but the possibility of him having help hasn't been ruled out. Regardless of this risk and the effect the attack had on him, Trump will continue his election campaign as planned outside of a brief two-day delay to Wisconsin.

"I cannot allow a shooter, or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling," Trump said. He did admit that the event "had an impact" on him and that he now wants to focus on bringing the country together.
