Summary

  • Limited Run Games has announced that it's re-releasing Doom on the SNES in 2025.
  • The new version will have several improvements, such as rumble support and circle-strafing.
  • There will be a standard version of the re-release and a collector's edition. Only 666 versions of the latter will be made.

The original Doom is known for being playable on almost every gaming system imaginable. In fact, it's been played on items that aren't even meant to run video games. There is an entire subreddit called 'itrunsdoom' dedicated to the strange bits of hardware that are capable of running the 1993 title. Random fans playing Doom on their blender isn't the only reason the game has a reputation of being playable on everything, though. The fact it gets ported to every console that comes out has also helped cultivate that reputation.

The title has even landed on the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, even though those consoles were released 27 years after Doom initially launched. It seems that anytime a new system comes out, it gets a Doom port. Yet, in the past few years, there have been no new consoles for Doom to be ported to. Don't worry, though, as the original Doom is still getting a new release, albeit on a console it has already been on. For QuakeCon, Limited Run Games has announced that it's creating an SNES re-release of the 1993 game. So, one of the biggest games of the '90s is coming back to one of that era's most popular consoles.

However, it is not just a simple re-release. Limited Run Games is promising a new and improved Doom for the SNES. This Definitive version of the game contains all four Doom episodes, the addition of circle-strafing, rumble support, performance improvements, level codes, and the ability for monsters to respawn on the punishing Nightmare difficulty. Therefore, it isn't going to be quite the same title it was when it was originally released on the SNES. But as this is still a Super Nintendo game, don't expect new and improved visuals that rival the likes of Doom Eternal.

1990s Gaming Is Back

There are two physical editions of this re-release: a standard one and a collector's edition. The standard edition contains a retro box, instruction booklet, a cartridge that is gun-metal colored, and a 12" x 16" poster featuring the classic shot of Doomguy on a mountain shooting down at demons. The collector's edition has some of the same stuff, such as the instruction booklet and poster. However, the box in this version is premium embossed foil and the gun-metal colored cartridge has blood splatters on it along with metal plates. Plus, this edition comes with a certificate of authenticity, which are all individually numbered. The number will likely be from one to 666, as there will only be 666 collector's editions made.

Limited Run Games hasn't yet announced an exact date for the big re-release, but it is coming in 2025. It will be interesting to see how well it does. After all, the world is used to seeing re-releases of games, even really old ones like Doom. However, a re-release on an old console is a more unique prospect. Perhaps it will lead to more SNES re-releases. Here's hoping for Chrono Trigger.
