"It Was An Emergency Acquisition:" Bungie And Destiny 2 May Have Died Years Ago Without Sony's Help
It's pretty obvious that Bungie has not been in a good state for a solid few years, what with several rounds of layoffs, the sunsetting of Destiny 2, and no Destiny 3 in sight due to rising costs. It's a studio in turmoil, and often regarded as the fault of Sony, with Destiny 2 fans blaming the corporate giant for all the studio's misfortunes since 2022.
However, it seems as though Destiny 2's sunsetting and potential shutdown could have come a lot sooner if it wasn't for Sony, as it's been suggested that Sony came in with an "emergency acquisition" when Bungie was close to shutting its doors for good.
Bungie Could Have Shut Down Years Ago Without Sony
This is according to former Bungie dev Liana Ruppert, who claimed in a recent post on Twitter that Bungie was "below the red line" before Sony's acquisition, and that if it hadn't been acquired immediately, the studio would have had to shut down Destiny 2 "at the very least".

Service is ending for Destiny 2. But the final update breaks a two year peak. It's also double the players who turned up for Marathon at launch.
Posts By Harry AlstonOn top of that, Ruppert goes on to claim that if people want to keep Bungie alive right now, it's best to support Marathon if you're able to, which makes a lot of sense since it seems like the studio has put all of its eggs in that basket. If you're one of the people constantly begging for Destiny 3 and logging into Destiny 2 to prove there's demand for a third game, your efforts might be wasted.

You could argue that Bungie isn't in a much better state with Sony's help, but at least we got Destiny 2 for another four years.
