Your choices will impact the outcomes for each character, and a lot of their performance hinges on their needs being met and their wishes being granted. With a bit of practice and time management, you can guide Yesterby to a brighter tomorrow. Here's everything you need to know about needs and wishes in Closer the Distance.

What Are Needs?

Needs vary depending on each character in the game, but they are essentially the virtues and personality traits of the villagers in Yesterby. Each character will have different needs, from harmony to health to belonging.

When needs aren't met, some actions cannot be done. For example, if Zek doesn't have any sense of accomplishment in his work, he can't do any carpentry or focus on his future.

Time-sensitive objectives require you to keep a close eye on a villager's needs to ensure they don't give up and struggle to get back on track.

How To Meet Villagers' Needs

Since each character has a unique set of needs in Closer the Distance, the way you meet their needs differs. For Zek, he can fulfill his need for accomplishment by playing his guitar while Galya needs to go for a run or exercise to feel healthy.

While everyone is different, they all need to eat and sleep regularly. Try arranging meals around the same time to maximize your day!

To find out what can be done to meet each villager's individual needs, simply select the need that's low and the map will zoom out and pause to show you all the actions that will help fulfill that need. Select any activity and let the rest fall into place.

What Are Wishes?

Wishes are similar to needs in that they're goals the different villagers need to fulfill, but they require more to complete. If your needs are low, it's possible that the villager won't be able to start or complete the task.

Wishes vary from person to person, and some people's wishes will directly conflict with their neighbors. For example, Pia will often disagree with most people about how to preserve Angie's memory.

Some wishes have time limits, like completing progress on the Boat Lodge.

Failure to complete the wish within the time frame, or fulfilling a wish that contradicts another, will lead to some unexpected consequences.

How To Grant Wishes

To grant wishes, you can select them from the sidebar. The map will zoom out and show you various options as for how to make progress towards that wish.

Characters you can't control have wishes, too. Keep an eye on them as well to make sure you aren't overlooking anyone!

Some wishes can be completed by having a quick chat with another villager while others require a character to commit to a task for hours at a time.

You'll often have the freedom to choose how you complete wishes, so keep an eye on each character's needs and the time to ensure you can fulfill as many wishes as possible each day. You won't be able to make everyone happy, but do your best!
