Summary

  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is mostly a serious game with some compelling themes, but it does have a fun side.
  • The opening moments of the game have a surprising reference to Shrek.
  • That easter egg even makes an appearance later on in the game, further cementing that it's a purposeful nod.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has a strange and surprising reference to Shrek in the opening minutes of its prologue - and it seems there are even more nods to the series later in the game.

We're only a few months into 2025, but it's already proven to be a stellar year for gaming thanks to Monster Hunter Wilds, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Blue Prince, and a ton more. Even with all those great games, though, there's one that seems to have taken a surprising lead in the early GOTY talks - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Since it was first shown off, Clair Obscur has generated a lot of excitement, and the early impressions certainly make it seem like it's lived up to expectations. If you're still unsure about whether Expedition 33 is for you despite so many positive reviews, then its surprising reverence for Shrek of all things might be a push in the right direction. It certainly was for me.

Shrek's Outhouse Can Be Found In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

That's Not The Only Reference To Dreamworks' Beloved Series

The opening moments of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 introduce us to its world, the concept of Gommages, and some of its central characters. It's an incredibly poignant prologue that'll probably sell you on the game right there and then, but it's also home to a cheeky little easter egg tucked away on a rooftop.

As pointed out by Twitter user BlueJayvideos, once you take control of Gustave and start grapple hooking around Lumiere, you can find an outhouse on one of the buildings. That's a little weird already, but if you take a close look at its design, which includes a crescent moon shape on the front, you'll likely notice that it looks exactly like the one seen in the Shrek movies.

Let's just hope Shrek isn't living up to his motto in there - "Better out than in, I always say".

In case you were a little sceptical about it being a reference to Shrek, BlueJayvideos pointed out that the outhouse also appears later on in the game and even doubles down on the easter egg by including a house that's shaped like Shrek's swamp. Clearly the team at Sandfall are big fans of Shrek, and wanted to pay tribute to the series in some clever ways.
