"Thank You All": Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Shatters Expectations, Selling Half A Million Copies In A Day

Summary
- Expedition 33 has sold over 500,000 copies in just a day since its release.
- The game's commercial performance has exceeded the expectations of Sandfall Interactive.
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has performed despite being on Game Pass, and launching just after Oblivion Remastered.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which was released yesterday, has already sold over half a million copies, surpassing the expectations of rookie developer Sandfall Interactive.
In a social media post to commemorate the milestone, Sandfall wrote, "A milestone for us, reached sooner than we'd ever imagined. Thank you all." The post is accompanied by a painting of Gustave and Sophie dancing, with the caption "500,000 copies sold."
Exceeding Expectations
This is a massive success for Sandfall and its publisher, Kepler Interactive, who likely didn't expect to reach these numbers so fast, especially given the game launched day one on Game Pass, and in the shadow(drop) of Oblivion Remastered.
Sandfall Interactive is a debut studio based in Montpellier, comprised of veteran French game developers. Several developers are formerly of major studios like Ubisoft.
Although Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's reveal trailer certainly excited fans, there was always a feeling that a turn-based RPG from a debut studio wasn't going to turn too many heads, despite a very interesting premise. After previewing Clair Obscur for TheGamer, I knew the game was something special, but you never know if a game is going to be as commercially successful as it deserves.
Well, my fears proved unfounded as Expedition 33 has already performed remarkably well, especially considering the game is available on Game Pass. As it stands, Clair Obscur's peak concurrent player count on Steam is over 71,000.
We don't have access to console player data, but one could assume there has been a respectable number of sales on the PlayStation 5, given that sales numbers don't include Game Pass players, who are mostly found on Xbox.
In his perfect 5/5 review of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, our own Ryan Thompson-Bamsey said, "Everything about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is either a fresh reboot to soothe the traditionalist's soul or an exciting, bold leap into new territory, and the result is a piece of art that pulled me in and refused to let go."
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, Game Pass and PlayStation 5.
