In the initial milestones, all transportation options are not necessary, especially when your city is still small. You have control until your city starts growing, and initially, you'll focus on basic transportation services as the first step in establishing the transportation network.

As your city expands, unlocking additional options becomes essential, with trains being one of them. This guide will assist you in how to unlock trains and all the steps to set up railways.

How To Unlock The Train

When starting a new city, you initially have access only to basic utilities, gradually unlocking more services as your city progresses. The same applies to transportation services, with access becoming available at the fourth milestone, the Grand Village.

Initially, you'll have access to basic transportation services, and you can unlock additional options from the transportation development tree in the progression menu. Here, the train becomes available as a second option after the basic one, and since the train is a first tier node, it costs one development point.

How To Set Up Railways

The train isn't crucial in your initial milestones, especially when your city hasn't expanded much yet. However, it can still be beneficial for local use. Setting up railways earlier is a good step to efficiently manage them.

When you decide to start setting up railways, you'll go through several steps, from setting up Rail Yards to creating passenger lines.

How To Set Up A Rail Yard

The Rail Yard serves as the initial step to set up railways, acting as the starting point for all trains and a maintenance facility, while also providing ten vehicles for use. This requires an initial cost of 150,000 and an upkeep of 30,000 per month.

Once you set up the Rail Yard, you have the option to upgrade it with Extra Rails, increasing the capacity by an additional five trains. This upgrade will incur a cost of 50,000 with a monthly upkeep of 16,000.

While the first upgrade adds more vehicles, there's another option to decrease the train maintenance duration called the Maintenance Hall. This upgrade requires a cost of 750,000 and a monthly upkeep of 34,000.

To complete setting up the Rail Yard, you must link it to a road to provide electricity and also that citizens can access it, and the final step to finish it is to connect it with the train tracks.

How To Set Up Train Tracks

Most maps come with built-in train tracks and outside connections. If your map doesn't provide one, you must create it yourself using a Double Train Track to ensure a way for trains to run in both directions, and it will require a cost of 2,500 for each kilometer.

There are two other options for train tracks, the Two-Way Train Track and the One-Way Train Track. These are useful for connecting the Train Yard with other tracks because the yard provides some single tracks, as each provides a single train track. The cost for each of these is 1,250 per kilometer.

To establish an outside train connection or extend your connections, you'll need to purchase additional map tiles to reach the edge and link the train tracks with it.

How To Set Up A Train Station

With a cost of 75,000 and an upkeep of 23,000 per month, you can establish a Train Station. This station allows passengers to board and disembark from trains.

Similar to the Train Yard, this Train Station will also require a road connection and linkage with the train track.

Once established, you have the option to upgrade it with Extra Platforms to increase the train capacity in the station. This upgrade will require 35,000 with an additional 7,000 per month for upkeep.

You can also upgrade it to enhance the attractiveness of the station by adding train station services such as small shops, restaurants, and kiosks for passengers. This upgrade will require a cost of 50,000 and an upkeep of 16,000 per month.

How To Create Train Lines

When you click on the station, it will present you with three clickable train icons. Each one allows you to create a line, connecting it either with an outside connection or with other stations.

To establish the train line, click on the desired point on your station and follow the train track to the other station location you want or the outside connection point. After setting the point of departure, return to the station to create a return route, enabling you to receive passengers at that station as well.

During this time, you will be able to receive passengers from both outside connectionsand other stations you create on your map.

How To Manage Railways

All transportation services will be managed in the same, accessed through the Transportation Menu. Click on the details line iconbeside the train line you want, which will open the line panel.

Here, you can view the line and its points. Additionally, you have the option to change the line color to distinguish it, and this color change will be reflected on the trains operating on that line. You also have the flexibility to adjust the number of vehicles you want to use in that line.
