From tips on traveling to an odd note on the importance of talking to your fellow denizens of the Purribean more than once, these tidbits should help you weather any early storm and live to tell the tale. Put your paws up high and do read on!

North Star

Go to the Furst Cave, the cave just north of where you get your boat at the beginning of the game for a quick level-up and the Warrior’s Braid, which allows you to attack while dodging and perform a Dashing Strike.

Mind you, you'll find duplicates of the Warrior's Brand further on. But getting your first instance of the Warrior's Braid very early not only gives you a great new combat technique; it will also help you get a feel for the controls, since you'll begin factoring in combos via the item.

Brute-Force Brigand

If you see an object you don't recognize, try attacking it and see what happens. Either it's just part of the scenery, in which case your attack won't connect, and you've simply wasted a couple of seconds, or it's secretly a bit of treasure you might not have noticed otherwise.

This applies to many, though not all, barrels; and the barrels are often identical, so it can be easy to forget to thwack them. A few coins are commonplace in barrels and boxes, and we've even found the occasional EXP shard.

If you hit the save parrots at the Fort Beakons enough times, they'll fly away, and you'll not be able to save at their locations for a bit. You can always sail off to another one, but, well, we learned this the hard way.

Set Sail Soon

Explore early - you will get an equipment piece or ship part almost everywhere that looks like a challenge. You can check your map to see how many treasures are on each island or island chain, too.

The map information doesn't cover dungeons, which have their own treasure counter. If you see a dungeon, give it a try. You'll know quickly if it's too much for you right now, but exploring the relatively close islands at the start of the main quest is a great source of EXP and more.

Upgrade equipment at the blacksmith early so that duplicates found in the world, which are free sources of further upgrade, can boost your arms and armor to levels which would be very expensive otherwise.

Talking to Kitty Cat enough times prompts him to tell you this, so try speaking with important NPCs multiple times in succession, as they'll not only have useful information on subsequent chats, but sometimes they'll even advance a side quest in this manner.

Belated Bounty Hunter

To the right of Mama Milka at the tavern, there's a long line of wanted posters for special foes. Some you'll encounter during the main quest, while most are optional fights you'll find while exploring either dungeons or the overworld.

You don't need to agree to accept a bounty, so as long as you've defeated the enemy, the specified poster will glow. Interacting with the poster at this point will provide you with an award for your effort even if this is the first time you've ever realized the foe was a wanted criminal.

Nyan Genesis

Visit the Magic Bone, the spell upgrade shop, which is a bit west of the tavern and blacksmith on the main island. Chatting with the shopkeep for the first time nets you the very useful Lightnyan spell, which shocks foes and works great for crowd control.

Here's when our aforementioned tip on repeatedly chatting comes in handy. Talk to her two more times to get the Furry Shield spell that pulls up a barrier to deflect damage for a limited time.

We're pretty sure we even needed this spell at one point to solve a puzzle in a dungeon, so don't miss it!
