Several games that have never had an online mode in America, like Project Justice and the Capcom vs. SNK series, are now fully playable with rollback netcode. This collection features everything from high-execution tournament fighters to more casual four-player arena fighters. This is a true treat for fans of fighting games from the Dreamcast and Playstation 2 era, and many of its best games can be enjoyed by casual fans of the genre as well. But which is the best in the collection?

The most obscure game by far in this collection, Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein, features Hayato Kanzaki, who most will know from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as its protagonist. This is one of Capcom's earliest attempts at making a 3D fighting game.

It has gigantic 3D stages with smooth animation and gameplay. The supers, in particular, are creative. You can zap your opponent with a super into a new zone that grants you powers like time manipulation or the ability to increase your size and damage.

Capcom made a crossover game from the assets of prior projects that had fallen through to create Capcom Fighting Evolution. This game is reminiscent of fan-made games in how it clashes a variety of art and fighting styles from different series. Most characters are grouped under the game they belong to, like Ryu being under Street Fighter 2, and their abilities and skills derive from that game series.

The mix and match of these different games makes for an imbalanced experience, but it's very fun to see the clash of styles. Most of the gameplay is nothing unique to the genre, but it has one of the best soundtracks of any Capcom fighting game.

In the '90s, when you thought of 2D fighting games, you likely thought of series developed by Capcom and SNK. It was many gamers' dream to see series from these two companies clash in one fighting game. Capcom vs. SNK Pro was a solid first attempt at making this dream come true.

While much of its potential was still left untapped, Capcom vs. SNK Pro is a well-designed game in its own right. It has a large roster and two different grooves that determine your abilities and supers. It was outdone in scale by its sequel, but it’s worth checking out to see the evolution of the series.

Street Fighter is usually known as a more methodical and tactical game, but Street Fighter Alpha 3 is highly fast-paced and execution-heavy. The Alpha series are the only Street Fighter games with air blocks, which means you don't have to be as conservative when launching your offense. It isn’t uncommon to juggle your opponent’s entire life bar in one go. It’s a game that rewards big combos and fast-paced aggression.

The inclusion of characters from Final Fight gives Street Fighter Alpha 3 a lot of personality. Guy, Rolento, and Cody are among the most fun characters to play in the game. Not only that, but there are different modes you can use to adapt to your playstyle and experience. Certain modes grant you more powerful supers, while others reward players with good execution to string together large combos.

Unlike most fighters made by Capcom, Power Stone is a 3D arena fighter. The stages aren’t just aesthetic like in most other Capcom fighters, but are environments you can fully engage with while fighting your opponent. Every match in Power Stone feels fresh because of the vast number of items that spawn randomly.

There is a lot of spectacle in Power Stone, such as collecting the stones and achieving your super form. It also has a fun parry system that adds a layer of dynamic counterplay. Arena fighters often have four players, which makes them great for parties, but Power Stone carves out its own niche since it is more focused on one-on-one play and storymode.

The gameplay mechanics are not as technical or sharp as its older sibling, Power Stone, but Power Stone 2 is the ideal party game. Its levels are gigantic in scale, often featuring multiple zones per stage. Playing just one match in Power Stone 2 feels like you’ve gone on a journey.

The basic attacks have been simplified to place more emphasis on destructible environments and hazards. This is a game where you’re fighting the stage just as much as your opponents.

2 Project Justice

This is an incredibly charming fighting game that could have been a larger series if Capcom had more faith in it. Project Justice is a three vs. three fighter that models its characters after high school stereotypes, ranging from bullies to class presidents to the faculty. The characters all have fun, cartoony representations and outfits that pop with a lot of color.

Project Justice only had a limited amount of copies on the Dreamcast, where it was arguably the best game on the console. What makes it fun is how much of a pick-up-and-play title it is. The execution is very relaxed, and the combos are easy. It’s a fighting game that you can master quickly, but not one that feels dumbed down.

Although the 2000s were a low point for fighting games in terms of commercial popularity, they were a golden age in terms of gameplay. Capcom vs. SNK 2 greatly expanded on the original in its vision of showcasing a clash between the two best fighting game developers.

Not only can you create countless team combinations of three characters from the large 48-character roster, but you also have six different grooves that determine your super meter and abilities. Certain grooves can make you stronger as you take damage, grant you dodges, or allow you to parry. There are endless combinations to experiment with in Capcom vs SNK 2, making it fun to play both as a casual player and as a veteran.
