While the general assumption is that these gonks have replaced their faces with their cyber implants, a player has found that, potentially, they may just sit on top of their existing faces.

"They Still Even Have The Eyebrows"

The discovery was made by Reddit user ScrapMetal4000, who was completing the Cyberpsycho Sighting mission, Where the Bodies Hit the Floor.

After flatlining Ellis Carter, a Maelstrom member who was tortured so violently, they effectively became a guard dog; the player closely inspected his body to find the cyberware inconspicuously missing. Instead, there was a gaping hole where his implant should be, revealing a face underneath it, reminiscent of the Titans looking through the wall in Attack on Titan.

This revelation sparked a range of theories and discussions.

One player suggested that it was simply a way that CD Projekt Red developed the Maelstrom gang members, using a "default NPC body and adding layers on top of it," adding that the lore implications could be that "they screw cyberware straight through the skull".

Another player theorized that it was "a texture bug," not intended for the player to see, calling it "the equivalent of burned characters, being healthy under their clothes," something which, ultimately, the original finder agreed with.

Whatever the reason for the mysterious face, Cyberpunk 2077 players don't like it. One said it made the Maelstrom more horrific, and another added that they couldn't "even describe how uncomfortable" it made them feel.
