Like all roguelites, there is a certain knack for staying afloat as your ranks begin to swell. Here are some top-tier Cult of the Lamb tips to avoid a miserable defeat.

Updated on June 20, 2024, by William Quick: Cult of the Lamb may be one of the best mixes of roguelite and sim-management games out there. It also manages to combine a cute art style with a horrifying setting and theme that we just come to accept the more we play. Overall, the game is relatively short, but there are still a lot of details to discover and new things that come to light via multiple playthroughs. Among those things are a few strategies and pieces of info that will let you feel like a Cult of the Lamb pro.

15 Nice Vs. Naughty Cult

The Path To Different Management Techniques

You may want to take the obvious path in the theme of the game by leaning hard into the fact that your cult is in service of an ancient demon using you to further its own ends, and that would be understandable. Going the brutal cult route does make a lot of things much easier if you're willing to deal with angry followers and other consequences.

The 'nice' route gets a bad rap due to its passive nature, but also yields some of the biggest social benefits. If you're not willing to leave gathering new followers to RNG and being able to afford their release from spiderwebs, then taking the nice route keeps your followers happy, loyal, productive, and together. Even old followers can contribute Devotion and help with rituals.

14 Getting Followers To Love Grass

Save A Lot On Harvesting

An infamous meal that you'll be cooking for your followers is Grassy Gruel, which is what would happen if you tried to cook grass in a pot, maybe with some water. Grass is easy to come by, so this is a cheap and fast way to keep your followers fed, but it isn't satisfying, lowers faith, and has a high chance of making followers sick.

This would be a pretty risky meal to continuously rely on if it weren't for the Grass Eater Doctrine. When you get the option to put this into effect, it removes all the negative effects of feeding your followers grass, which makes it purely positive. It helps in terms of conserving resources and buying yourself more time for grinding and farming.

13 Devotion Even In Death

Can't Even Sleep When You're Dead

Your demon master can grant you a lot of otherworldly powers, but there are limitations when it comes to your followers. You can convert them, but they're still at the whims of the natural order so they'll get sick, get older, and eventually die. There's a whole element as to how you deal with the dead, and they can still work to your benefit.

Multiple structures can deal with bodies, but to start gaining from them, all you need is a Burial Pit and the Funeral Doctrine. Whenever a follower dies, you can wrap them up and plop them down in a pit for sanitary conditions. Then, when you've got time, you can hold a funeral for them and they'll continuously generate Devotion from beyond the grave.

12 Scavenging Is Key

Grab All The Things

You don't have to rely on chopping trees around the cult grounds or gunning for those commodity chambers during crusades. Instead, try chopping down everything in the room and see what you get. Mushrooms and crystals can sometimes hide behind the tall grass, and smashing up a campfire frequently rewards you with pieces of meat to cook some tasty meals for your beloved followers.

Cult Of The Lamb: How To Find Hops

Hops are a basic crafting ingredient added in Cult Of The Lamb's Sins Of The Flesh update.

You can use crusades as opportunities to go scavenging by unlocking the ability to focus and return to your cult mid-run. To use focus in Cult of the Lamb, you'll need the Power of Return, which can be unlocked early on in the game. You'll lose fewer items by returning to your cult instead of dying in battle, and your followers won't lose faith in you or find you weak for choosing to return from your trip early.

11 Unlock Anchordeep And Silk Cradle Early

Finding The Shortcuts

Don't feel like you need to polish off each Heretic before moving on to a new zone. It benefits you to have all four zones unlocked as early as possible since you'll need items from each area to complete key missions. Gems from Anchordeep are needed to fuel the Lighthouse at Pilgrim's Pass, and Sozo, the mushroom-obsessed king, requires you to bring him plenty of fungi to earn some talisman shards.

Unlock Anchordeep and Silk Cradle as soon as you build up enough followers by performing a ritual to open the doors. Silk Cradle requires a whopping 12 followers, but you can always sacrifice one of your faceless masses afterward if you don't wish to feed and clothe that many cultists.

10 Nice Lambs Finish Last

The Brutal Path

In the world of Cult of the Lamb, you won't be rewarded for treating your followers as your friends. Rather, the game encourages you to be as ruthless and callous as possible, meaning that you can choose to give your followers the cannibal trait to make them gain faith in you when you make Minced Follower Meat using sacrificed or otherwise dead animals.

It's much easier to simply murder and eat dissenters than it is to re-educate them for five days in a row. There's no real benefit to going easy on your followers, so you may as well reap the rewards of being as unhinged a cultist as possible.

9 Upgrade Beds Quickly

Have A Nice Place To Stay

Although it costs a great deal more to build teepees for your followers, you'll want to upgrade as many beds as possible, as early as possible, to save yourself having to repair four sleeping bags every morning.

You can unlock the Materialistic trait for your followers, which will cause them to gain Faith when they sleep in an upgraded bed!

What's more, you can even build teepees over broken beds for the same price as building them over intact ones, meaning you'll save yourself lumber. Your followers will get to work on the construction bit, and when they're all done, you'll see a perfectly put-together bed that any dedicated follower would be thankful to curl up in.

8 Farmageddon

Farm All The Things

Farming crops, catching fish, and cooking meals for your flock is a surprisingly large part of the game. If you don't make an effort to plant as much as you can, your people will quickly die out from starvation or start leaving in droves when their faith in you recedes. To prevent this, keep yourself well-stocked with seeds by purchasing them from the seed seller outside the door to Anchordeep.

She will start selling seeds for different crops as you unlock each Heretic's domain:

  • Darkwood gives you Camellia flower seeds.
  • Anura gives you mushroom spores.
  • Anchordeep gives you cauliflower and pumpkin seeds.
  • Silk Cradle gives you beetroot seeds.

Make sure you purchase the seed silo and farmhouse upgrades using your divine inspiration for your followers to farm your crops in your absence.

7 The Mini-est Boss

A Small Victory Here

There is one miniboss that is easily missed, especially if you're not fond of beating up a giant snail and its shrimpy sweetheart in the process. To get this boss battle underway, you'll need to rely on chance and get to Rakshasa's restaurant during one of your crusade runs.

Smash up the tables and take a few whacks at the snail, and you will incur Rakshasa's wrath enough for him to challenge you to a quick and fiery battle. Defeat him, and you'll be rewarded with the Massive Monster Shrine blueprint to construct anywhere back at base camp. Not too shabby.

6 Secret Follower Forms

Change The Dress Code

Is your headcount looking a little thin after leaving a pestilence to run rampant among your followers? Don't worry too much; you can buy followers from the spider outside the Silk Cradle entrance once per day. This is the same spider that you sometimes meet out on your crusades. Sometimes the followers they have ensnared will be unwell, which makes them cheap (or free) to purchase, and other times they will cost you 50 gold coins apiece.

Either way, it'll be worth the money or the time spent recuperating, given how much strength can be derived from numbers in this game, so you'll never have to worry about finding recruits to rescue. You can also unlock a special Snail follower type by interacting with the five snail statues you'll find scattered across the realms. Finding and absorbing all five will unlock the follower form the next time you return to your cult grounds, so you can use it immediately!
