Summary

  • Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford hasn't ruled out the possibility that Borderlands 4 will cost $80 when it launches this September.
  • In a talk at Pax East, Pitchford claims that the game "might be" the same price that Nintendo and Xbox have now established, but a decision hasn't been made yet.
  • Pitchford explains that a potentially higher price could be possible due to high development costs and tariffs on packaging.

Xbox and Nintendo recently combined forces to ensure that gaming is about to get a lot more expensive. Mario Kart World established itself as the first $80 game, which was then quickly followed by an Xbox price hike that saw increases on pretty much every product it has. Now that two of the big guns are charging more for games, we're all braced for other publishers to smell the money and follow suit.

One of those publishers is Take-Two, as despite selling Mafia: The Old Country for just $50, the same probably won't be happening with Borderlands 4. During a panel at Pax East on Friday (thanks GamesRadar), Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford was quizzed on exactly how much Borderlands 4 will cost now that games are starting to get even more expensive.

Borderlands 4 Could Potentially Cost $80 Due To Development Budget

Pitchford doesn't explicitly state the game will be $80 when it launches this September, but he does admit that he "[doesn't] know what the price is going to be." He goes on to suggest there are debates at Gearbox and Take-Two over what the price should be, with one side worried about pushing away potential buyers, and others seeing it as an opportunity to make back more of the game's development costs.

"On one level, we've got a competitive marketplace where the people that make those choices want to sell as many units as possible, and they want to be careful about people that are price-sensitive," says Pitchford. "There's other folks accepting the reality that game budgets are increasing, and there's tariffs for the retail packaging. It's getting gnarly out there, you guys."

He follows that up with a bit more uncertainty, claiming that Borderlands 4's price "might be" the new $80 price point that Nintendo and Xbox have now set, but that it's also possible that they "stay back" with this release. Either way, we'll know what price Gearbox and Take-Two go for when pre-orders open, which Pitchford says will happen "soon".
