You may know what you must do, such as landing specific combos, but you'll need to know where to focus your efforts regarding combat and completing challenges. If you want to have a smoother riding experience while playing through the story, try out these crucial tips.
Prioritize Building Your Rep
Even though you need to complete missions to continue through the story, building Rep will play a major role in your success. Many times, when you arrive in a new area, you'll need to increase your Rep to unlock the missions, which involves putting multiple graffiti on glowing points around the area.
You'll notice that some of them are high up, so spend time looking around the area and identifying ways to get there. For instance, you may want to grind on a rail, jump at the top of it, and use it to reach the spot.
As you approach a hard-to-reach graffiti spot, mash the button as soon as you reach it, and you'll immediately start the animation and spray-paint the wall. If you don't know how much you need, you can always pause the game, and it'll inform you how much Rep you need.
It doesn't hurt to spend some time collecting as much Rep as you can instead of meeting the minimum threshold, as doing so could prevent you from quickly finishing the mission if you have to do some unexpected extra painting.
The only time this doesn't apply is if portions of the area are blocked off.
Prioritize Maintaining A Single Combo During Crew Battles
If you want to take over an area and continue through the story, you must learn how to win during Crew Battles, and while you're not the only one scoring points during these matches, you'll play the largest role in getting your team to win. Because of that, you'll need to maintain a single combo during the full two minutes if you want to win.
Sure, you could land multiple combos to score enough points, but the way the game allows you to keep stacking multipliers as you keep it going makes it more effective if you maintain the combo as long as possible.
Sometimes, people panic if they reach the end of a rail and can't find something to ride, ending their combo when they land on the ground. Luckily, you have plenty of tools to help you extend your combos.
For instance, if you need to get from one rail to the next but your double-jump won't reach it, then you can always do a manual, and if you grind on a rail, the meter will refill and allow you to extend it further.
You can also use your jet boost to get some extra distance and reach a new rail or wall, extending your combo further.
Leaning And Wall Riding Are Your Combo Extenders
You'll want to watch for rails and places where you can wall ride to extend your combos, as they'll increase your multiplier and help you get a higher score.
Leaning means pressing your control stick or movement button to follow along the corner. If the rail turns right, you should hold the stick or button to the right, and you'll see the multiplier increase.
Keep in mind that while you should perform tricks while you continue the combo to boost the score further, you should never do it while you try to lean into corners or wall ride, since you'll cancel the multiplier.
However, you're free to perform tricks while jumping through the air, since it'll extend your combo further.
You can only use each curve and wall ride to boost your multiplier once, so ensure you go to new places to maximize your score.

Don't Underestimate Air Attacks And Skating During Combat
Sometimes, you'll deal with enemies, and each of your trick moves allows you to perform attacks against the police. However, ground combat isn't always the best choice, especially as you run into flying enemies or ones with quick attacks, so remember that you can perform strikes while you jump.
You can hop into the area and press your attack button as you land, hitting enemies and taking them out. Grinding to give yourself more height and strike people from above is also effective.
You shouldn't go out of your way to get off your board to attack enemies unless you plan to perform multiple attacks.
Remember that combat isn't designed to be straightforward in this game, so you won't be performing combos or heavily relying on it. Enemies tend to take multiple hits to take out, so you'll want to play it safe, especially since you have a low health bar and could lose all your health in four or five hits.
As you consider those points, you should develop a hit-and-run strategy.
They won't be able to catch you if you run away or skate, so you can easily land a hit, run away, and repeat until you defeat them all, playing it safe and taking your time.
Understand How To Deal With Heat
As you play through the game, spray painting the walls, you'll see your Heat increase, and more enemies will chase you in the area. You'll always see it in the top-left corner, and as your Heat builds up, you can't go to dance spots to switch between characters.
If you want to lower your Heat, you'll need to enter a bathroom and change your outfit, causing the police to lose track of you if they're overwhelming you or you're running low on health. However, if you can't find one nearby you may need to deal with them, especially if you're trying to finish a mission in the area.
While running away remains a viable strategy, getting Heat level two will cause turrets to spawn, and instead of shooting bullets, they will launch claws that grab onto your character and prevent them from escaping. You must perform standard attacks to free yourself from the hooks.
The claws are challenging to avoid, so you should go up to the turret and attack it, and once you do, you can spray it with graffiti to put it out of commission.
Since turrets won't respawn, you can use this to make it easier to travel, though you should note that police officers will respawn, so don't bother fighting them.
