Summary

  • The ShadPS4 emulator is making huge strides in getting Bloodborne playable on PC.
  • Last month, it got the main menu and part of the character creator working, but there was a red tint to everything.
  • Now, the red tint is gone and the opening cutscene even plays in full.

Update 21:33 BST 11/09/22: The ShadPS4 emulator has now managed to get Bloodborne's opening partially playable. It looks like we're going to see even more of Bloodborne playable on PC over the next few days.

While every modern PlayStation classic under the sun is getting PS5 remasters and PC ports, Bloodborne has been left in the gutters of Yharnam to fend off the beasts for itself. So, fans are taking it upon themselves to get it running on PC with emulation, and while it's not quite playable yet, the team are making huge strides.

The PS4 is over a decade old now, but the emulator scene was stagnating until ShadPS4 emerged last year. It is by far the best one out there, but even then only one out of 160 reported titles are currently compatible. It's making strides in expanding that number, working on Dark Souls, Red Dead Redemption, and even Power Rangers: Mega Battle, but its most famous mission is to get Bloodborne completely playable.

A spiritual successor could take the idea of Bloodborne even further.

Last month, they finally got the opening titles and main menu working on PC and even accessed the character creator, but it was completely broken and a red tint was applied to the entire screen. However, they got rid of the tint and even managed to get the opening cutscene to play, bringing us that much closer to Bloodborne working on PC.

This Is Unbelievably Fast Progress

Not long ago, Bloodborne emulation was just a black screen. It 'worked' in that the emulator could open it, but nothing happened. ShadPS4 made a huge breakthrough last month when they got visuals, even if those visuals were dipped in the red goo of the Nightmare Frontier.

Only a month later, they have a cutscene working. This is fast for emulation, and is incredibly hopeful for those hoping to finally play the game on PC. Of course, there is some murky legal water with emulating video games.

Sony is reportedly working on an internal PS3 emulator.

Downloading a game from the internet, whether it's for the SNES or the PS3, is piracy, but even if you have a legal copy you want to run on an emulator, publishers frown on that as well. So, while huge leaps are being made in the scene, it could all come crashing down if, on the rare instance, Sony lawyers intervene.
