Being able to summon your own serpents in battle will be a great asset for the coming difficult battles ahead. So, with this guide in hand, we'll help make sure you understand the rules of his fight so you can employ his dirty tactics against your own foes.

Guangmou Attacks And Combos

Attack Name

Attack Description

Suggested Counter

Spiritual Onslaught

Guangmou summons an arc above his head of spiritual orbs that then fly toward the player. As they near the player, Guangmou teleports in a black mist behind them for a random follow-up attack.

Either continuously dodge through it or use your spin attack to deflect the projectiles.

Poison Mist Breath

Guangmou deeply inhales and then sprays poison mist from his mouth in a small arc directly in front of him.

Keep your distance, dodge rolling back if necessary.

Wind Spirit

Guangmou points his fan at the ground and begins to raise a small spiritual ball from it. The ball follows Guangmou's fan for a couple of seconds before following the player and exploding in a burst.

Back off when you see the spirit conjured or interrupt it with an Immobilize spell.

Snake Dance

Guangmou begins to dance with his fan and will state a line such as "Boys, greet our visitor," before summoning four white serpents that erupt from the ground in a square formation. These snakes will persist, shooting venom at the player for several seconds. Guangmou can conduct other attacks while these snakes are summoned.

Continue sprinting and dodging around the arena. Keep your distance from Guangmou, as openings for attack will be few while these snakes are summoned.

Windy Retort

When being struck by a barrage of attacks, Guangmou can quickly retort with a brief burst of wind around him, knocking the player back and dealing minor damage.

Be cautious when attempting to do long combo chains, preparing to dodge back when you see him raise his fan.

Vortex of Wind

Spinning his fan in the air, Guangmou summons a vortex of wind wherever the player is standing. A dim blue light will appear under the player before the wind erupts from it.

Sprint out of the circle and toward Guangmou to make an attack.

Jumping Spirit Fan

Guangmou jumps into the air and fires a quick barrage of spiritual orbs. These orbs fire in a straight line at a diagonal descent toward the player from the player's right to left.

Dodge forward toward Guangmou.

Mist Warp

Guangmou gathers himself in a black mist and teleports a short distance away.

Non-attack. Follow Guangmou, but beware of follow-up attacks when he reappears.

Guangmou's attacks are not too dangerous, being generally forgiving for mistakes and clearly telegraphed.

Your primary concern will be two attacks:

  • Snake Dance
  • Poison Mist Breath

Both of these attacks can deal exceptional damage whilebuilding up your Poison meter quickly. Being hit with the latter will almost be a guarantee of becoming poisoned.

While poisoned, you will take residual damage for several seconds. At this point in the game, curing it isn't an option (nor recommended for resource reasons), so your only way to face it is prevention.

The best way of preventing poison is to learn Guangmou's attacks, so refer to the chart above.

Otherwise, his spiritual attacks are only dangerous for their ability to stagger you into attacks from his snacks or to build with his other hits.

Keep in mind that his projectiles can be deflected with your spin attack, opening you up for some nice combos if you have the stamina to maintain it.

How To Defeat Guangmou

Guangmou will begin every fight sequence with his Spiritual Onslaught. You can deflect this with your spin attack or simply dodge through them.

Either way, he'll typically teleport behind you for a follow-up attack, so don't let him get the better of you.

Before entering this fight, ensure your Gall Gem Soak is equipped on your Gourd. With this, your Poison resistance will be higher.

Guangmou's teleportations can make getting good combos on him a bit tricky, but this also means you have ample time to charge your Smash-stance attacks.

Your best openings to get these attacks will be:

  • Vortex of Wind
  • Wind Spirit

We recommend if you haven't already, taking the upgrade that allows you to charge your strong attacks while dashing. This will improve your fight experience.

The primary problem you'll have with Guangmou is closing the distance as he has good ranged options and a very dangerous Poison Mist Breath to watch out for in melee.

If you're struggling with getting good damage on him, observe these tips:

  1. Jump attacks will be good distance closers.
  2. Your transformation can put a burn effect on him, and the strong attack charge can allow you to quickly dash and close the distance for notable damage.
  3. If you're poisoned, use your transformation. Your poison meters between Wukong and his transformation do not carry over either way.
  4. Take a point in upgrading your Spin Attack, allowing your deflect of his Spiritual Onslaught to become a great opportunity for damage.
  5. Don't try to turn his Snake Dance into an opening. You'll more often get punished if you're new to the game.
  6. Use your Immobilize on his Wind Spirit attack, shutting down this move and getting the bonus for increased damage while attacking as its cue animation is very long.

Don't worry about taking any cures if you get Poisoned. It isn't worth the waste of resources so early in the game and a lack of opportunity to safely take them. We do warn, however, that Poison will continue to deal damage during cutscenes.

We included that in our first-attempt video above for both a laugh and an example. If you die from Poison during the ending cutscene, do not worry; you can still receive your rewards from Guangmou when you return to the arena.

Eventually, Guangmou will be put to rest, and you'll have the ability to steal his spirit. With his spirit, you can summon his snakes into battle and drastically increase your Poison resistance.

As you collect his spirit, you'll also gain these rewards:

  • Blood of the Iron Bull
  • x2 Yarn
  • x527 Will

With all of these in hand, you can now say you've reached the halfway point of this adventure's starting area. The difficulty only spirals up from here.

As you venture forth, we recommend (if you haven't already) to stop at the Shrine and pick up the Wandering Wight spirit in your "Retrieve Spirits" tab.
