Chen Loong is an NPC and an optional boss that the Destined One can encounter in Chapter 3. The boss may appear old and fragile, but like the other Loong bosses in the game, it is quite a challenge to fight against. However, if you’re well prepared, you’ll be able to take this boss down easily and will be able to initiate his quest.

How To Find Chen Loong

You can find Chen Loong near the North Shore of Bitter Lake Shrine in Chapter 3. You’ll have to defeat Kang-Jin Star on the Turtle’s Back first. After you’ve defeated Kang-Jin Star, Zhu Bajie will join you temporarily as you arrive at the North Shore of Bitter Lake Shrine.

To reach Chen Loong, you’ll have to go in the opposite direction of the shrine, near the shore. Chen Loong will be wandering around in the waters. It is quite easy to miss, but if you have Zhu Bajie with you, he will pass a comment about a familiar face. Approaching Chen Loong in the area will start the boss battle.

Chen Loong Attacks

Unlike most other Loong bosses that you’ve faced so far, Chen Loong fights very differently. The boss mostly utilizes magical lightning attacks over physical ones, which can be fairly difficult to dodge.

Attacks

Description

How To Avoid

Lightning Claw

Chen Loong will reel back a little, readying his claw, and unleash a quick slash. In the later phases of the fight, the boss may throw this attack twice in a row.

You can avoid this attack by dodging in any direction as the boss is about to strike. After the attack, the Lightning Claw lingers in the air for a moment, so make sure you don’t accidentally touch it after the initial dodge.

Dancing Electro Balls

Chen Loong will summon several tiny electro balls around him and send them towards the Destined One. These tiny electro balls will travel through the seawater while following the player.

It is difficult to avoid this attack and even if you dodge, you still might get clipped by a few balls. Luckily, this attack doesn’t deal much damage and the boss rarely uses this attack. The best way to avoid it is to run away and jump when the balls are about to hit you. Note that if one of the balls hits you, you’ll be stun-locked and will get hit by the rest.

Electro Ball Shower

The boss will levitate into the air, launching a barrage of tiny electro balls towards his front.

You can avoid this attack if you’re too close to the boss. Also, dodging repeatedly in any direction helps in consistently avoiding most of the tiny electro balls.

Lightning Cloud

Chen Loong will summon a dark cloud of lightning in a small radius, damaging the Destined One if he's caught up in it.

This attack has a similar animation as the Lightning Claw attack. You have to dodge back as you see that this attack is coming. It deals a lot of damage, but due to the short range, you can easily avoid it if you dodge away from it in time.

Thunder Storm

Chen Loong will raise one of his arms in the air, summoning a barrage of thunderbolts that will strike random locations near the boss.

There’s a tiny delay between the lightning bolts striking the ground and the damage that is dealt, allowing you to avoid the attack if you dodge exactly as you see the lightning bolt hit the Destined One. Continuously sprinting and dodging away while Chen Loong is casting this attack is also a good way to avoid it.

Lightning Roar

The boss will kneel slightly with thunder sparking all around him and then unleash all of that thunder in a small radius around himself. This attack deals a lot of damage if you get caught by it. The boss will use this attack often. Chen Loong’s entire body will be covered in lightning after using this attack.

This attack has a short range, so you can easily avoid it by moving away from the boss when he’s about to use it. However, if you notice Chen Loong going for this attack during your light attack combos, quickly dodge to the back to avoid it.

Lightning Dive

Chen Loong will jump into the air, and dive in a straight line, leaving bolts of thunder in his wake. After Chen Loong has finished using this attack, he may immediately use another attack, such as the Lightning Breath, to attack you.

Right as you see Chen Loong going up into the air, dodge twice to the sides. The first dodge will avoid his dive, while the second dodge will help you avoid the follow-up lighting bolts that drop right after his dive. Watch the boss closely as he stops to see what his next move will be.

Lightning Breath

The boss will reel back his neck, and you’ll be able to notice a few lightning sparks in his mouth, as he quickly unleashes a laser-like lightning attack from his mouth.

Watch for the attack’s animation, and dodge to the sides as he’s about to throw out the lightning beam. This attack deals a ton of damage and is incredibly quick, so watch out for it.

Tail-Slash Combo

The boss will unleash a 3-hit attack combo with his tail. The first two attacks are done one after the other. For the third and final attack, Chen Loong will jump into the air and strike the ground with his tail.

Watch the boss closely and dodge when he starts spinning to dodge the first tail strike. The second and third attacks are easy to avoid by dodging as you’re about to get hit.

Loong’s Tail Summoning

Chen Loong will put his hand into the ground and also dig the ground with his tail, causing either one, four, or eight tails to appear out of the ground in a random location near him. In both versions of this attack, the tails will spin around, dealing damage to the Destined One if he’s caught up in it.

This attack has a very distinct animation, and whenever you see it coming, watch out for the tails and get away from it. Regardless of the number of tails, if you sprint or dodge away from it, it won’t be able to harm you. If you’re caught by this attack and cannot get away in time, dodge exactly when the tails are about to spin.

Lightning Call

The boss will raise one of his hands in the air, bringing it down in a swiping motion. This attack will unleash a series of lightning bolts striking in a straight line.

You can avoid this attack by dodging to the sides.

Lightning Breath From The Sky

Chen Loong will jump into the air, casting Lightning Breath, but instead of a one-hit attack, the boss will turn his head horizontally while using the Lightning Breath continuously. After he’s done with the attack, he might come down and strike the ground, which will then explode after a short delay, if the Destined One is standing near his landing location. This follow-up can kill you in one hit.

You’ll automatically avoid a lot of damage from this attack if you’re standing too near the boss. But be wary of the follow-up. If you’re standing further away, dodge to the front exactly when the Lightning Breath is about to hit you to avoid it.

Harp Smash

Chen Loong uses this attack only once in the later phase of the fight. He’ll jump into the air with the harp in his hand, and smash it into the ground. The harp will release a massively damaging electric shock in a large AOE after a short delay.

You can avoid the initial attack by dodging when the harp is about to hit you. For the follow-up, you’ll have to dodge repeatedly to the back to avoid it.

How To Beat Chen Loong

Like most bosses in Chapter 3, Chen Loong uses several lightning attacks. You would have defeated Kang-Jin Star before fighting against Chen Loong, so you’ll be able to craft and equip the Loongscale Armor set, which greatly reduces the duration of the Shocked state after getting hit by lightning attacks.

You will also have Zhu Bajie helping you out in this fight but try not to underestimate this boss. Chen Loong can quickly take down your entire health bar if you’re not careful. Focus on dealing damage to the boss by using Immobilize and Cloud Step.

Make sure you use Immobilize only during the early phases of the fight. After you’ve taken down half of Chen Loong’s HP, he will immediately dispel Immobilize by using Lightning Roar attack.

You can use the Red Tides spell to deal a considerable amount of damage to the boss. You can also try to keep your distance and let Zhu Bajie deal most of the damage. If you keep dealing damage to the boss using Cloud Step and Red Tides, you’ll eventually come out victorious.

After you’ve defeated Chen Loong, he will become a friendly NPC and you can initiate his quest. Fulfilling his quest will reward the player with the Ruyi Scroll.
