Baldur's Gate 3's Vicious Mockery Originally Had So Many Insults About Poo That Swen Vincke Had To Step In

Baldur's Gate 3 has a bunch of exciting and fun spells that you can add to your arsenal, but I'm putting it out there that Vicious Mockery is the king among them. Sure, it's not great from a practical standpoint, but how else would you be able to hear Gale call an enemy a cuck or a ballbag? It's worth having equipped just for that alone.
However, it has been revealed that a significant number of the insults included in Vicious Mockery weren't all that vicious, and instead largely revolved around matters of the fecal. In a recent Baldur's Gate 3 livestream (thanks GamesRadar), junior writer Martin Docherty revealed that the list of insults drafted up for Vicious Mockery was a bit too poo-centric.
Baldur's Gate 3 Originally Had A Lot More Poo-Related Vicious Mockery Insults
In fact, there were so many insults revolving around excrement that Baldur's Gate 3 creative director Swen Vincke had to actually step in and get some of them removed, asking the team for "less poo, more Shakespeare."
"All of these different insults are being put into the sheet," says Docherty. "So I was like, 'Amazing, I'll collate these' – and then Swen had a look at them and was like, 'Ah! Hmm… Why are so many of them about poo?' We were like, 'Ah, interesting, that's an interesting point.'"
Of course, not all the poo-related jabs were taken out, as you'll still occasionally hear characters call others "dung-pretty" and compare them to "a sow's fart." However, if you hear a much more eloquent insult after casting Vicious Mockery, you can probably bet it was a poo joke once upon a time, transformed into something a little more articulate and classy. Whether you think that's a good thing or a bad thing, we'll let you be the judge.
