Philgrave's Mansion is actually quite close to the entrance into the Lower City. This is a side quest you will want to take on before finding and saving Oskar the artist from Act One, which will lead you back to this mansion. Aside from that quest, Mystic Carrion will ask you to carry out his own set of perilous tasks.

Update on February 4, 2024 by Sharnelle Earle: We have reorganized this article to provide clearer information on what happens during Find The Mystic Carrion's Servant quest. This concise information will help readers get to the information they need faster. This quest takes you to multiple different locations in the Lower City and connects to other questlines, so it's vital to know what you're getting into.

How To Enter Philgrave's Mansion

Choose Your Own Adventure

There are different entrances to Philgrave's Mansion. The first one is more obvious, a seemingly blocked-off doorway that looks like stone, as in the photo above. If you interact with the doorway using someone who has high Arcane, you will be able to understand that there is a spell at work and will be able to dismantle it with a skill check.

Aside from a well-trained wizard or warlock, you can use the spell Knock to unlock the passageway. You can also brute force it with someone like Karlach, who can just smash the stone wall down and walk in.

Alternatively, there is a hole in the wall down the south-side stairs of the mansion, hiding behind a wooden crate. If you shapeshift into something small, you can also enter this way.

Where Is Thrumbo?

Following The Trail Of Blood

Thrumbo is actually hiding in a small house just past the Heapside Strand waypoint. Leave the mansion and pass the Heapside Strand waypoint until you find some vines to climb down to your right.

When you enter this house, you will see some blood on the ground leading toward the wardrobe. Interact with the wardrobe as if you were looting it and Thrumbo will jump out. At this point, there are a few things you can do.

Thrumbo will ask for your compassion and aid, as Mystic Carrion is somewhat of a slave master and Thrumbo his puppet. At this moment, you can decide to obey Mystic Carrion and kill Thrumbo or you can agree to take him down and free Thrumbo.

How To Bring Thrumbo's Body To Mystic Carrion

Use your alternate select on Thrumbo's dead body to bring up a set of options. You can pick up his body and put it in your inventory. A body weighs a lot, so it is best to give it to someone who isn't carrying anything.

Where To Find Mystic Carrion's Body Parts

Collecting All The Jars

If you aim to right wrongs and play on the morally good side, you will probably want to defeat Mystic Carrion. Four different jars contain parts of his body needed to defeat him.

Once you access these jars, you must destroy them in any way possible, such as dropping them from your inventory and throwing fire at them.

For each jar that is destroyed, the Mystic Carrion will grow weaker.

Jar of Mystic Carrion's Heart

As stated above, you can find the Mystic Carrion's heart inside Thrumbo himself. You can access this by killing Thrumbo. If you do not want to kill him, there is another option.

If you side with him, you will have to convince Thrumbo that Mystic Carrion's heart is inside of him by finding a letter in a secret lair that proves it to be true. The secret lair is where you will find Mystic Carrion's liver and brain in the Under City sewers.

Jar of Mystic Carrion's Lungs

Mystic Carrion's Lungs can be found in the graveyard's mortuary. The Baldur's Gate graveyard is northwest of Basilisk Gate. You can access the mortuary by heading to the trapdoor located at X: 31 Y: 21. It will be past the Mortarch Gracie Scyre, making her rounds below the couple.

You will have to find a way to lockpick the trapdoor. This should be easy because no one is facing the trapdoor, so you won't get caught. Inside, there are only three rooms. Jar of Mystic Carrion's Lungs will be in neither side room but further into the main room on the table.

Jar of Mystic Carrion's Liver and Brain

Mystic Carrion's liver and brain jar are located in a special location within the city sewers. You will have to enter the sewers and traverse through the underground until you get to the Under City waypoint.

You can enter the sewers through a manhole in the right-hand alleyway from the Basilisk Gate waypoint or by a manhole in Bloomridge Park, to name a few.

From the Under City waypoint, walk straight west and enter the Passageway. Inside the next area will be a treasure trove. Upon looting any of the chests, undead will spawn everywhere.

The undead will induce Spell Rot on your team so that you take Necrotic damage each turn, which will increase depending on your spell level usage. You should stick to melee damage for this fight so that you do not take on more damage than necessary.

Once you defeat the undead army, a room to the right will open up. This room will have the liver, brain, and the note proving that Mystic Carrion's heart is inside Thrumbo.

Quest Rewards

By completing this quest, you can acquire the Torch of Revocation, which is needed for the Free The Artist questline in Act Three. Depending on who you kill, you can gain access to some rare and useful times in the game.

If You Kill Mystic Carrion

Item

Purpose

Torch of Revocation

Very Rare +1 Club that can banish ghosts.

Staff of Cherished Necromancy

Very Rare +2 Staff that grants Heightened Necromancy and Life Essence Harvest.

Armour of the Sporekeeper

Very Rare Light Armour that increases Necrotic damage and grants Malefic Funghi and Spore Sacks.

Veil of the Morning

Very Rare armour that grants Let The Undead Blanch With Fear and Turn Undead.

If you side with Mystic Carrion, all you will get is the Torch of Revocation from the Gilded Chest behind him in the mansion.

If you side with Thrumbo, he will give you the Crypt Lord Ring. This ring gifts the wearer the spell Create Undead.
