Feeding your resident Wizard in Baldur's Gate 3 takes a little more than a few potatoes and a Scratch-given Salami. Sacrifices will need to be made if you're hoping to keep the gallivanting Gale in your catalogue of companions. But what's a few magic rings to a genocide-inducing bomb?

If you're not keen on blowing the Sword Coast into the Astral Plane, we'll tell you all you need to know about how to feed your loyal Wizard. So grab your magical items, grab your Gale, pray to your Eldritch patrons, and sit down while we give you a scoop from the Weave.
How To Give Gale Magic Artifacts And Items
Baldur's Gate 3 allows Gale to consume just about any magical item not blessed specifically by a deity (i.e., Absolute-powered items, divine weapons, etc.) or too large to consume (like full armor sets).
If you're not sure if your magical item can be given to Gale, look at the item's description. Towards the bottom of its description, if it is consumable, the item will state beside an exclamation mark: "Gale can absorb this item's magic, destroying it."
When donating items, the game will automatically display all permissible options in the donation window. You do not need to remember or dig for the appropriate items.
Items that are Artifacts, like the Staff Of Crones, are no longer consumable by Gale. If you are coming from the Early Access, forget what you knew about the items you used to give him and pay attention instead to item descriptions.
You cannot give these items, however, until Gale prompts you to ask for one. Trying to give one to him early or put it in his inventory will result in nothing.
This means you will need to hold the items you wish to give to Gale in your inventory until he asks for them, prompted by an exclamation mark over his head. Speak with him and donate it to him.
If your magic item is in someone else's inventory, don't worry. You can still elect to donate the item to him.
Should I Give My Magic Item To Gale?
Giving any magical item to Gale will destroy that item permanently. The type of item or its rarity appears to have no effect on how it affects Gale.
You'll need to give up at least three magical items in Act One to progress his quest line. Each time, its effectiveness and the length between prompts will diminish.
The best items to give to Gale will always be the ones that you don't foresee needing or using. In essence, give Gale your trash because giving him your valuables has no extra benefit.
All prompts to give Gale magical items will end after speaking to the wizard, Elminster Aumar, on the way to Moonrise Towers from the Underdark (Grymforge entrance). This will further advance Gale's questline, and your magic items will be safe for the time being.
Therefore, keep a cache of three useless magic items on you for your journey to keep your wizard fed and happy. No one likes an unhappy Wizard - especially not if they know how to cast Fireball.
