Exploring a giant world like Faerun is a daunting task. On the one hand, Baldur's Gate 3 creates a gorgeous, detailed world that feels amazing to run around, filled with curiosities, quests, and characters. You can spend hours upon hours in the first area alone, completing menial tasks and learning more about this expansive world.

On the other hand, sometimes it's not very clear exactly what you can interact with. Sometimes characters seem to blend into the environment, and the camera can be a little finicky in enclosed spaces. Thankfully, the game provides some handy tools for seeing the world around you in new ways.

How To Highlight Objects

The first way to gain more information about the world around you is to hit the key associated with the 'Show Item Labels' command.

By default, the key associated with this command is Left Alt. Holding this button down will make any interactable items in the vicinity glow and give them item labels that you can click on.

On the controller, you must instead press the Right Analog stick in. This will perform the same action.

When you use Show Item Labels, containers (whether these are regular containers or corpses you can loot) will show whether or not they have items inside or not.

  • A regular container will only show up if it has items inside.
  • A lootable corpse will be marked with an asterisk (*) if it has items to loot, and will be marked with the word 'Empty' if it does not.

How To Use Active Search

There is also another way to investigate. Instead, you can use something called 'Active Search.' This is accomplished by holding down the Interact button:

  • On PlayStation controllers, this is the X button.
  • On Xbox controllers, this is the A button.

Using Active Search will cause a ring to expand out from your currently selected character. When you release the button, a menu will come up that lets you easily Loot or interact with the items in your vicinity.

Active Search is only available when using a controller.

How To Highlight Creatures And Characters

Another way to make exploring the world a bit easier to deal with is to activate a permanent highlight around creatures and characters. To do this, you'll need to hit the Grave button (`). Hit the button again to deactivate the glow.

This will make it easier to notice smaller or camouflaged characters without relying on the minimap so much.

Character Outlines are only available when using a mouse and keyboard.
