- Ultimately, Larian decided that it needed to start "looking at how we can do stuff that we get excited about," which then led to the project getting scrapped.
Baldur's Gate 3 was so successful that it naturally led people to question when Larian was going to make the next one. After making truck loads of money and garnering a huge fanbase willing to do anything for them, the idea of the studio moving onto something new never really entered the minds of many. That's exactly why it hit like a truck when Larian eventually explained that it would be moving on from Baldur's Gate and Dungeons & Dragons as a whole.

Walking away from a beloved masterpiece like this is its own challenge.
PostsLarian CEO Swen Vincke later claimed that another project involving Baldur's Gate was in development before the decision to move on was made, and that many in the studio were delighted they wouldn't have to work on it. It makes you wonder exactly what those plans for more Baldur's Gate were, and Vincke's more recent comments about the thing being in a playable state only makes that curiosity even more intense.
Baldur's Gate 3's Follow-Up was Actually In A Playable State
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Vincke claims that "you could already play stuff" in the Baldur's Gate 3 follow-up that Larian had been working on, and even teases Baldur's Gate 3 fans by claiming that it would have been "something that you all would have liked." In the end, the team decided to scrap it as it had already worked on a D&D related title for many years, and didn't fancy spending even more time working with the same constrictive systems.
"It's something that you all would have liked, I think," says Vincke. "I'm sure, actually. And we actually went pretty fast, because the production machine was still warm. You could already play stuff. But you played it and you looked and it, and, like, you know, this is OK. I mean, we'll probably have to redo it 10 times. And do we really want to do this for the next three years?"
Vincke goes on to explain that since the team didn't want to spend years on DLC, it was suggested that the project could have been turned into Baldur's Gate 4, but that idea was eventually binned as well for the same reasons listed above. Larian then began "looking at how we can do stuff that we get excited about," which brings us to right now, as the studio held a summit last month to discuss one of its two new RPGs it has in development. Whatever Larian comes up with, I'm sure fans will be desperate to try it regardless.
