Sony has revealed that Astro Bot will feature cameos from more than 150 PlayStation characters, which is more than double what we saw in Astro's Playroom.

Although this week's State of Play might have been a bit of a dud, there were a few big announcements in there, from Monster Hunter Wild's first gameplay trailer to Silent Hill 2 finally getting a release date. By far the biggest, though, was the reveal of Team Asobi's next game - a "fully-fledged" sequel to Astro's Playroom simply titled Astro Bot.

We've only had one trailer for Astro Bot so far, but it's already become one of PlayStation's stand-out games in 2024 due to how it builds on everything that we all loved about Astro's Playroom. One great example of this is the cameos from PlayStation characters, who seem to have gone from simple easter eggs to find throughout levels to fully-fledged roles.

Astro Bot Will Feature More Than 150 PlayStation Characters

Not only do the PlayStation characters appear to have more importance to the story this time around, but the official Astro Bot website has revealed that there are going to be a ton more of them. As pointed out by Twitter user realradec, the Astro Bot website reveals that there are going to be "over 150 iconic VIP Bots inspired by legendary characters from 30 years of PlayStation history".

I guess we're calling them VIP Bots now?

Alongside that description is an image of Astro Bot rescuing Ratchet, who has been tied up to a tree. The trailer for Astro Bot showed several of these VIP Bots in dangerous situations, so it's possible that one of the main objectives of each level is rescuing or finding the VIP Bots, which would be a neat upgrade from Astro's Playroom.

As pointed out by realradec, Astro's Playroom had between 50 and 60 PlayStation characters in it, so more than doubling that is a big step up and something that's shown off by all the new characters in the trailer. Some of the highlights there include Parappa the Rapper, the protagonist from Journey, and an Ape from Ape Escape.
