Assassin's Creed's latest leak points to Japan, but heading there after Ghost of Tsushima feels pointless
PostsUnlike past games in which we chose between a male or female protagonist (with Kassandra and Eivor becoming the 'canon' choices), Shadows' two are completely different characters. They both appear to be integral to the story, more like Bayek and Aya from Origins, working together in secret.
In the trailer, we see Naoe's village besieged by samurai, set ablaze as she watches from across the river. It pans over and reveals that Yasuke is among those ransacking her home. But as he stands in the flames, he looks down at his reflection in the water and removes his helmet, deciding to help Naoe instead.
While it's a CG trailer focused primarily on the story, it does give us a glimpse at the difference between the two playstyles.
Yasuke is far more of a tank, using heavy weapons, kicking down doors, leading the charge at war. Naoe by contrast is far stealthier, slinking along rooftops and using her hidden blade to catch enemies unaware. But we also see them working together against one opponent in the woods. They reveal that they are among the Shadows, all while a revamped Ezio theme plays.
Everything We Know About Assassin's Creed Shadows
Ever since 2008 when the series got its start, fans have been asking for a game set in Feudal Japan. After 16 years, Shadows is finally taking us there.
The game first leaked in 2022 as "Codename Red", and it wouldn't be confirmed until a year later when scriptwriter Pierre Boudreau updated his LinkedIn with key art from the game.
Last year, it was reported that Shadows is taking inspiration from Splinter Cell and Hitman, shifting the focus back towards stealth.
Like Valhalla, Odyssey, and Origins before it, Shadows is an open-world RPG. What sets it apart is that it's the first of the new 'Infinity' platform, which has been described as a "hub" linking different games across the series.
Assassin's Creed Shadows launches later this year on November 15. You can pre-order the standard edition right now for £59.99. There are also gold and ultimate editions for £94.99 and £114.99 respectively.
