If you played Assassin's Creed 3 at launch, you might remember that Kaniehtí:io's database entry spoiled the big twist that Haytham was actually a Templar, long before the penny dropped during Charles Lee's initiation. Well, over ten years later, Ubisoft is up to its old tricks, because Black Flag Resynced also spoils a major twist.
Spoilers for Black Flag Resynced.
Benjamin Hornigold, who helped to establish the Brethren of the Coast in Nassau, is presented as something of a mentor to Edward Kenway in the first half of the game. However, come Sequence 10, he is revealed to have left the pirate life behind, taking a pardon to work for the West Indies Templar Order, where he now uses his intimate knowledge to hunt down his former comrades.
It's a heartbreaking moment of betrayal that ends in one of Kenway's most intimate assassinations, as he unleashes his raw frustration and denounces his former ally as little more than a "snake." Only, if you're playing Resynced—the new remake—that twist is spoiled the moment you open the Animus Database, as Hornigold is listed under 'enemies' before the reveal.
It's 2012 All Over Again
It was Reddit user AlteredBridge51 who first warned that the Animus Database was spoiling the twist, but their post didn't gain much traction. We verified it for ourselves at TheGamer, loading up an earlier save and discovering that, yes, Black Flag Resynced does indeed reveal that Hornigold is an enemy before Sequence 10, spoiling one of the most gut-wrenching moments in the game.
This is exactly what happened in 2012 with Assassin's Creed 3, and luckily, Ubisoft had the sense to patch the codex entry so that new players eager to read up on the history and lore of colonial America wouldn't be punished for doing so. It's pretty widely known these days that Haytham is a Templar, given the infamy of that (frankly underrated) slow-burn intro, but back then, most assumed the prologue was just setting the stage for Connor, showing how the Assassins formed in the Americas. Not that his father was a turncoat.
Benjamin Hornigold is based on the real-life figure of the same name, who was also a pirate turned pirate hunter, so those who have brushed up on their Golden Age history will likely see the twist coming, but for newcomers with no prior knowledge, it's a shame to see the twist upended so blatantly. Hopefully, there'll be a patch soon enough that slots him into the 'Allies' section before Sequence 10, ensuring that the twist remains, well, a twist.
